Honda Rear-view camera
Honda Rear-view camera
I have been wanting to add a rear view camera to my car for sometime now. I have been to many threads at this site and I have not seen anyone try to use a rear view camera from a MDX or Honda Pilot. Has anyone attempted this or is it even possible? If it is not possible..... is the only way to get a rear view camera installed by using a unit such as Dom's?
Thanks
Thanks
The main and only reason to date is cost!
You could definitely purchase the camera used in the vehicles mentioned but you are looking at $600+ just for the camera. You would then still have to install the applicable hardware/wiring to get the signal incorporated into the Navi etc..
- Bottom line, you can get the same spec camera for $200 or less on the internet not to mention have an easier time installing it.
-- Yes, a unit like Dom's will be required
Overall, the rear camera mod is quite easy and can be done for less than $400.. And you get an input for aux/DVD use as well. Facilitating sound for the aux/DVD input will run you ~another $80.
Let the fun begin
Good luck

The 07 TL rearview cameras (same as 06 Ridgeline, 05 RL, 06 Pilot), will not work with the older Nav units (3.x software). The rearview cameras for the 4.x software Nav units are much cheaper as they incorporated the functionality in the DVD unit itself and an additional 6/7 pin connector was added.
You simply connect the new camera, route the wires, terminate them in a connector and plug it into the Nav unit.
For the 3.x software Nav units, the cost is much higher due to the external switching box, etc that is required so don’t bother going OEM if you have a 3.x software Nav unit.

I paid less than $100 for a great quality rearview camera when I organized a one time only groupbuy. I believe the TVandNav2GO unit runs around $200ish, so parts for a good, custom, aftermarket system can be had for much less.

I have DOM's unit (~$200) and a backup camera I bought off ebay ($135). Install of the BU Camera took about an hour and it's mounted above the license plate frame between the plate lights. Works great day and night and with DOM's unit the camera displays on the navi screen as soon as you put it in reverse.

The 2004 - 2006 TL all have 3.x waiting to confirm that ALL 2007 TL and not just the Type S has 4.x...
The 2 units look like this...
3.x DVD unit

4.x DVD unit

I tapped power for the bu cam from 1 backup light and tapped the trigger wire to the other.
Thanks, Kenny.
by the "trigger wire," are you referring to the wire that comes with a switch on it?
I see that Dom's unit has two video inputs, how do you determine which one is used? if there is only the one trigger?

no, the trigger wire is NOT the one with the switch.
As you said, Dom's unit has 2 video inputs, one is controlled by that switch (or dvd player), the other input is controlled by the trigger wire (bu cam), when that wire is triggered (by the backup light) it will override both the navi feed and the switched feed.
