Unhappy Homelink setup ?

I did some searching on the forums and didn't find an answer so don't flame me for this

I am trying to set up my homelink for my garage door opener. I did it the way I was supposed to in the manual and found out it was a rolling code. So I parked my car on my driveway and hit the "training" button on the garage opener box and blabla within 30 seconds I went to my car and held the homelink button to set it... but it never worked. I'm wondering... is my car too far from the garage box to receive the signal? I say this cus my garage at the moment is stuffed with a bunch of stuff and no way I can get my car in there and park right under the box (which probably would work best). But is this the reason why it isn't working?

I can't imagine that being inside the garage matters. I'm pretty confident that being in the drive way should be sufficient.

ya i did the remote thing a few times but it didnt work because it noticed it was a rolling code opener so you have to do it differntly in that case... which is what i'm trying to do.

I couldn't get mine either.

There is a number for HomeLink in the Owners Manual. I called that and they talked me through a procedure different than what's in the book. Hooked me right up.

What about your garage door opener?

Does your garage door opener have a LEARN mode. Meaning -after- you program your homelink ( per the user's mnaual ), you press the button on the garage door opener, it's light lights up saying I'm ready so press the button on your -new- remote control unit which in this case is your homelink. So, while the "learn" light on the garage door is still lit, you press the homelink button so the garage door opener will discover it. Make sense ?

I seem to vaguely recall holding up the garage opener close to the homelink buttons in the car.

step a) activate learning mode (special button on garage opener)
step b) hold garage opener up to homelink and press both at the same time?
step c) some other things
step d) profit

what I did before to train the Homelink on a rolling code opener was:

-hold the opener to the homelink and press at the same time until you see the homelink blink
-activate the learn mode on the opener
-press and hold the homelink until the opener's light flashes (as in my case)
-press the homelink for 1/5 second (it doesnt work instanteneously) and the door should open/close

i was parked under the opener when i did mine before. the instructions on the quick start guide were crap, and so were the ones on the opener.

hope this helps

Woot I got it to work!

Here is what I did... the steps are probably unorthodox and some random but it all worked out

1. hit 'training' button on garage door (forgot garage door opener remote so went to get it)
2. a few min later hit garage door opener remote button and noticed it wouldn't open the door!
3. hit 'training' button again and then put remote next to it and hit the button (light came on and so i knew they were 'linked' or now 're-linked')
4. unplugged the garage door opener from the wall outlet
5. went in car and held homelink button and garage door opener remote button at same time for like 5 seconds (i then hit the button again afterwards and noticed it stayed solid aka was working)
6. plugged garage door back in and hit the homelink button and it worked!

... and all of this with the key not even in the ignition!
they say the key has to be in the ignition and sometimes also needs to be turned but i forgot all about it until the end and it worked fine.

All of this after going thru the step by step process in the manual which didnt work the first time like this... which meant i was supposed to have a rolling code garage opener (which i really think i still do have) but for some reason just holding the remote to the button worked.

Case Closed.

this is a random question but... is there a way i can set up a code with my homelink so that i have to enter/say the code in order for the button to work (garage open)? i wouldnt want someone stealing my car, then opening my garage and stealing my other stuff. lol.

^^^no. that is the exact reason why i chose not to program it...think about it, they break into your car, hit the awesome "go home" button on your navi, now they know where you live AND have access to your garage/house, since most people dont lock the garage door(going into the house).

alittle tip: i cut the red(or whatever your color is) string because if your garage door has glass windows on the top, they can smash that and pull that "string." the string is a release for the garage door, when its pulled, u can EASILY slide the door up and gain access

Whoa I forgot about this thread. Now I've been trying to program my new apt gate to the homelink but no luck whatsoever. But I know it is possible cus a friend of mine with a different car was able to do it with his apt gate and his car. I dunno though... but if it doesn't work then it's not a biggie.

thats why i programmed home to be a near by intersection. also, that red rope is for allowing you to open the garage door if you ever lose power.

Is it possible to set up the homelink without the remote for the garage door?
My cousin left the remote in the Pathfinder when the insurance people claimed the vehicle [it was involved in a bad accident].

i dont think so, you can just call the manufacturer and they can send you a new remote and tell you how to program the remote to the door.

You can park outside the garage to program it. It really couldn't be any other way, when you think about it—if, like me, you have a one-car garage, it can be quite difficult to climb up to reach the "Learn" button if the car is parked in there.

You should set up the PIN on the "Go Home" feature so that it will not plot out a route, or display your address, without the user typing in (or saying) the PIN first.

For that matter, if you're concerned about someone breaking in and finding your address, you shouldn't keep your registration card in your car. Keep it in your wallet so that it's there when you're driving and then it goes with you when you leave the car. Otherwise, the address is there for anyone to find. You're only required to have the registration in the vehicle when it's being driven, not when it's parked and nobody's in it.
