HFL update re: Nov 2013 Service Bulletin
I have to wonder, is it possible on a 3G ?

New Accessory Available: Siri Eyes Free Mode
Currently Applies To: ’13–14 ILX, ’13–14 ILX Hybrid, and ’13–14 RDX
Just so you know, we’re offering a new accessory that provides greater convenience for drivers using a
Siri-equipped iPhone—Siri Eyes Free Mode.
If you’re not familiar with Siri, it’s the voice recognition feature built into the phone’s operating system.
It lets you use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings, make phone calls, and more.
Siri Eyes Free Mode takes that Siri functionality and adds it to the vehicle’s HFL system. Using the Talk button on
the steering wheel, you can tell Siri what to do or ask it questions without taking your eyes off the road. And to help
keep them on the road, Siri blocks any visual feedback that would appear on the phone’s display. For more info, be
sure to check out the attachment on the next page.
Right now, Siri Eyes Free Mode is available for just these models:
• 2013-14 ILX Premium and Tech - ALL
• 2013-14 ILX Hybrid - ALL
• 2013–14 RDX - ALL
It’s installed as an HFL control unit software update, so be sure to follow the procedure in installation instruction
BII 50045, Siri Eyes Free Mode HFL Software.
Now it clearly says for 2013-14, but my question is since this is an update to the 2013-14 HFL and the 3G has HFL albeit a much older version, if the newer HFL module could be adapted to a 3G?
Anyone have thoughts on this?

I'm interested in finding out. If the port doesn't change there's a chance. I'm not sure if the new HFL units have more than 2 buttons though, even if it would work in our cars, we'd only have access to the 2 we have.

No. Read the last paragraph. It's a software update to the HFL unit. I'm 99.99% sure these modules won't work in the 3G.
^
I did read that, & acknowledge that it is a SOFTware upgrade for current 5G HFL modules.
MY question to be clear was, is there any reason that a 5G HFL module couldn't be retro-fitted into a 3G TL with HFL.
Essentially I'm talking about replacing the hardware module of the 3G HFL with a 5G HFL and then applying the Nov Service Bulletin software upgrade against that HFL.
And I assume it's mostly a harness/pin out issue to decide if it would be possible, but that might not be *all* it is.
With regards to the buttons, we have 4 the HFL Activate/Talk & Back/Disconnect buttons on the top side, and below that the similar two Voice Command buttons.
I couldn't do a C&P of P2 of the Nov 2013 service bulletin because it was photo, not text, but it appeared to me that the primary Activate/Talk button of the HFL was the one used to envoke the Siri Eyes Free Mode.
I'll see if I can post it as a picture, but the other reason I hadn't was simply that anyone can jump on over to the Service Bulletin's thread and open it from there.
I'll post back with at least links if not a pic shortly.

OK so here's the ServiceNewsBulletin Thread
https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-2004-2008-93/acura-servicenews-bulletins-588838/
Follow the directions to gain access to the bulletins, then open the November 2013 bulletin.
Or just grab it from here without all the B.S.

I will modify / correct my earlier statement regarding which buttons, in the ServiceBulletin it appears it's actually the Voice Activation button, which on our 3G sterring wheels would be the one mounted on the lower portion of the wheel that would be used to issue Voice Commands to the Radio or Navi systems.

Def not possible on the 3G with factory hardware as the bluetooth doesn't support a lot of functions. There may be an aftermarket way but I don't think you can change the software on the 3G TL hardware and get it; the hardware in our car is b/w 6-10 years old!

But I'm asking about if the HFL hardware itself could be replaced, upgrading OE 3G HFL to OE 5G HFL. So far no one seems to know this, I may try calling the toll free number tomorrow in the Service Bulletin to inquire.
If I do, I'll post any information I obtain.

actually we only have 2. the 2 smaller ones on the bottom are for navigation only, it does not connect to the hfl at all

its possible if
i think its possible if you figure out the pin out of the Bluetooth module. our 3g tl module is controlled by the two HFL button, not the voice button. and from the repair manual, the module have connection to audio unit for sound, power, and communication signal for display call ID, and voice commend from HFL itself. so if we figure it out what the communication signal is, then compare it to the new module which has siri eye, then it would works.
BTW, our HFL is bluetooth 2.0 based, if we upgrade it to newer bluetooth 4.0 version, it also can steam music, display song info, and of course siri.
if you guys have any different idea, share with us.
