HFL Disappeared
HFL Disappeared
This morning when I got in the car, the HFL tried to pair with my Treo 650. The Treo crashed (yeah, I'm really shocked, too
) but it seems to have taken the HFL out with it. The top display said "Phone" and the radio was muted. I tried pressing the HFL buttons on the steering wheel, but they were completely unresponsive. Finally, I shut off the car for a minute or so and turned off the BT on my Treo. When I started the car back up, the radio was back (Phew!) but the HFL buttons are completely unresponsive. They don't even beep when pressed. When I check "HandsFreeLink" in the MID, it just says, "No information available." When I check the system diagnostics screen in the navi, it says everything is OK, including the little box for HFL.
Is there any way to get it back without disconnecting my battery? I'm at work now with no tools and also I don't want to lose any settings elsewhere in the car.

i'm not sure if it will even work if the battery is disconnected. i thought that would only restart the navi. well if you do disconnect it, let us know if it worked. coz i have a treo 650 and it has happened to me but it hasn't taken out my HFL yet
i just did what you did and restart the car

Last night, I got back in my car to head home for work and the HFL was responsive again. However, it wouldn't connect with my phone. So, I deleted the phone and re-added it and it seems OK now. I have my car at the dealer right now getting some rattles fixed and I asked them to make sure the HFL is OK, too (not that there's really anything they can do to make it fail again).
I think the car just needed to be turned off for more than the few minutes I gave it when it happened.

I got my car back this morning from getting routine service and some rattles fixed. They ended up putting in a new ceiling and map-light unit. The rattles are GONE! Woo!
They weren't able to find anything wrong with the HFL, but they replaced it anyway "just in case." I noticed it behaves a little differently than the original, so I'm thinking the newer units have slightly different firmware. For instance, I had my home number stored as "Home" in the old unit but, when I tried that with the new one, it suggested it was too similar to "Call" and to pick something longer or different. Another great difference: When answering an incoming call, it used to take about 3 seconds after I hit the answer button for the caller to be able to hear me. On this one, there's no delay at all.
All in all, that was a great service visit.

I don't know how to check, but I'm guessing it's updated since my car was among the first 8,000 or so (according to my VIN) of the 04's. Pretty much anything they put in there is going to be a lot newer.
Maybe you could go to your dealer and demonstrate to the tech that the delay is unacceptable and that you suspect a newer HFL module will fix it.
