Help - How to backup NavTech DVD??
As we are all aware, the Acura NAVTECH DVD’s are nice to have and it is an expense when we upgrade. I have since received the Acura TL v3.50 DVD NAV and I want to back it up and put the original safely away. I have tried over the past few days to back up the DVD and I can burn it but it gives an error when I put it back in the car.
Here are some things that I have done –
I have tried this with two different DVD±R DL Burners
- Plextor’s PX-716A – firmware v1.08
- NEC’s ND-3530A – firmware v3.01 - including Bitsetting, Riplock removed and RPC1 versions
Using Memorex DVD+R DL 2.4X
Win/Intel Computer w/ WinXP Pro SP2
1. Tried NERO with both DVD drives and the Plextor had some issues. The NEC burns wonderfully with the newer firmware and is fastest. When I put it in the Car – it gives an error.
2. Tried CopytoDVD and this also did not work
3. Tried DVDDecrypter v3.5.4.0 and this works the best so far. I was able to use ISO Read mode and then loaded the .mds image file from that. It burned great and when I put it in the car it gives still the same error. I tried changing the booktype but that still does not work.
One thing that I did notice is that I can hit the Map/Guide, Menu, and Cancel, hit version and then load disc and it will load the new disc and erase my custom bitmap image. But...after that, it gives the DVD error.
If possible, I need detailed step by step instructions on what to do from some confirmed process. So far, I have made about 8 coasters and this is getting expensive. Can someone help me figure this out so that I can back this up?
Who ever gives me the correct way to do this and it works will get a wonderful prize. (I promise)
But...It has to work.

You could probably save yourself few coasters by using search. At least some of the methods you tried have been attempted before. No success so far.
If the new 3.50 DVD will have an updated software, not just maps, it may be worth trying to boot the system frm CD with the new .bin files and use the new software with old DVD.

This is great information and I have tried that and it still wouldn't work. I also searched many of the cd/dvd forums and people are backing them up. In paticular, Apple computers with Toast seem to work great. Some people also have it working with DVDDecryptor on a PC with "booktype" and some don't. So there is some confusion on the how and whys.

Let me know how it goes. I am going to try the latest Alcohol 120% and see if that changes anything.
Thanks -

I think I may of found the problem.
"There is some type of protection in that it is very similiar to the way sony playstation protects there discs. They have code on inner layer of the disc that the dvd hardware player reads at first load. So copying the dvd is only the first part of it. Thats is the easy part. You would need a mod chip for the player to get it to work or something like that."
I don't know how true this is but it makes some sense -

Thanks for the information. I did read that and what was confusing was that post and some other cdfreaks.com posts show that people have been backing up the DVD's and they work in the earlier generation of the Acura models. The newer models with the DVD-ROM Drives must have that firmware that won't allow reading of the drives. I will venture off now and try to find out if there is a firmware update that can allow these drives to read DVD+DL burned.
Thanks again -
My local computer store has Verbatim DL - R 4x in stock.
I will get them if someone tells me which way is most likely to succeed?
I wont mind opening up the DVD rom box in the trunk to find out how it's attached. Hopeflly by end of this week cuz I have 2 exams at school

I don't think it's the "burst cutting area" protection as I used a green marker to cover the original DVD and the system had no problems of booting up.
Does the red laser have no problem of "seeing" through green ink? Didn't a black marker when I tried a few mins ago.

I guess this proves that DVD+R DL is readable.
