Headrest monitors & DVD/Navi Conversion
Finally had my monitors installed and a DVD/Navi conversion. Sorry I'm not a very good photographer, but the installers did an excellent clean job installing everything. Work was done by Movin On Sounds in New York
2 x 5.8" widescreen Alpine monitors
Audiovox DVD player installed in the rear armrest
Transmitter for the wireless headphones mounted below the 3rd brake light
DVD / NAVI conversion.

Work was done at Movin On Sounds in West Hempstead. A little pricey, by worth the extra money. Most the extra money went towards Alpine monitors instead of the Ebay special at $200-400 a pair.

Since the DVD player is mainly for the backseat peeps, I wanted it in the back so they can have access. I knew the monitors were expensive compared to other monitors out there, but didn't want any problems with el cheapo from China for $400 for a pair.

I have a question. Did they use the AV Electronics unit or the Sokolov unit for the DVD/Navi conversion? Where did they hide all the boxes? I'm doing the box hiding today (everything else is done, except for the screens in the headrest, but it's all prewired), and I was wondering where to put the Sokolov box and the AV switcher. I found a place that can be completely hidden in the trunk, but I'm just wondering if that's the best idea. Please let me know. Thanks!

No idea where they put mine. They didn't use the AV or Sokolov unit. The invoice gave me the manufacturer, but I don't have it with me right now. I've seen pictures of other people's installs putting the box in the truck, right panel under the carpet. I think the XM unit is there as well.

Need help with conversion
First off, sorry for askin a question I'm sure plenty of you can answer. Here it is thought...
I have an 04 Acura TL w/ Navi and I want to do the conversion so I can play DVD's on my navi screen. Couple questions though...
1) What are my options regarding whatever converters there are out there?
2) Is there any way to avoid cuttin wires? Warranty issues?
3) Is the question of two channel vs surround still not solved yet?
4) What could I do if I wanted to put a dvd player in my glovebox instead of
having to change DVD's in the trunk?
5) Lastly, how much should I be lookin to spend on the conversion?
Thanks for any help you guys and girls might have. From Chi-town...holla!

RivFlaco,
1) The most common options are the AV Electronics box and the Sokolov box. Do a search for both to get more details.
2) Both AVE and Sokolov have plug and play version of their units which mean you don't need to cut any wires and they should not invalidate any warranty.
3) I think the best sound possible is still two channels with the Blitzsafe adapter. That's what I did. To go full surround you'd need either a pre-amp to decode the five channels which you could then pass to the stock amp, or somehow find a way to tap into the data stream in the head unit. Both are pretty far-fetched ideas...
4) I put a PS2 in my glovebox. It's my console and DVD player. Works perfectly. I ran wires from my glovebox to my trunk where I have my AV switcher (I used the Sokolov box). You can also put a stand-alone DVD player in the glovebox. Several people have done it. Try doing a search for that too to see pics.
5) It depends on a lot of things: quality of the components you get, how you do the audio, are you putting LCDs in the headrests? My install has cost:
- audio AUX Blitzsafe adapter: $80
- AV switcher and Sokolov box: $355
- PS2 slim: approx $145 US
- Inverter to power PS2: approx $25 US
- Various connectors and wire: $100
That's $705 so far. I haven't put the LCDs in the headrests yet. I'm hoping that'll cost about $600 Canadian, so about $450 US. Depends if I do it myself or not.
So there you go!

Thanks for the reply Zax...I noticed that you're recommending blitzsafe, but I also have XM which might screw that up right? I've tried to find these conversion units online and I think I'm typing something in wrong or looking in the wrong places. Also, I noticed that on another thread you were helpin out another person. Here's my question regarding that:
if I have the same adapter as this other person, and an FM modulator (dunno which to get), I should be able to connect this in the trunk and be done with it? Maybe I'm missing a step...in case you didn't notice, I'm a novice at this...I'm used to workin on human bodies rather than cars so you might have to dumb it down for me. Ha. thanks

We have a doctor in our midst.
There is still a way to connect it with XM. People have done. You might have a volume problem but with a couple of relays you should be able to do it. Unfortunately, I can't give you details on that because I'm in Canada, and the Canadian TL doesn't have XM so we don't need to worry about it. Search for the "Blitzsafe" thread. It's huge. Read the whole thread. It's very informative. Tells you how to hook up a switch to the yellow wire which is an absolute must!
As for the Sokolov adapter, that can definitely be hooked up in the trunk. That's where I did it. The picture quality is great. The FM modulator might be able to be hooked up in the trunk where the antenna leaves the window, but I'm not sure since I haven't done it. I used the Blitzsafe which connects right into the head unit. Which means taking apart the whole center console which let me say is not easy.
Good luck with your install!
