Hardwiring a GPS thru Center Vent on 2005 TL
I want to hardwire my Magellan Maestro 4250 GPS and mount it in front of the left center vent, above the stereo display.
I don't want to attach my GPS to the windshield or to the dash so the vent mount was the only option left.
I bought a ProClip vent mount and swivel adapter for the GPS. Great stuff by the way.
I wonder if I will be able to run the wires from the fuse box through the vent, then to the GPS when it's attached it to the mount. Is the vent open or is it kinda of sealed around the air duct coming from the engine compartment?
Thanks for your help.

The back of the two center vents connects to two ducts which have an enlarged "collar" allowing the back side of the vents to fit inside for a somewhat snug fit. There is also some foam on the rear of the vents around the opening that fits into the ducts.
Event though the fit is tight, if the wires are small enough, you should be able to fit them between the rear of the vent panel and the ducts, but don't expect to be able to pass the wires down through the ducts (using the ducts as wire conduit) as there are flaps controlling airflow a few inches down into the ducts.
Removing the center vent piece (without damaging anything) will be the biggest challenge. Personally, I'd recommend removing the plastic trim around the gauges (it just pulls straight out, and is held in with plastic clips) and then removing the gauges (4 screws) to allow you to get access to the back of the vent panel and help push it out from the back side.
Good luck...

you can do this:
Take the wire from the fusebox, wire it under the kick panel under the steering colum. From there route this wire to the center console and then up it, behind the radio display and to the vents. Drill a small hole in the vent and connect to the GPS. After that, put some calking or tape around the wire to seal up the hole.

I've got proclips for both my cars to hold my palm and ipods.
Great product but wicked expensive!
As Nate says, the vent unit is a bitch to get out. You have to hook the inside of the vent and pull like hell. There are several places to get power, the clock and a junction connector are all back there.
