Focal K2 (or equivalent) and TL

First TL (as of last week) and my first post.

I have a set of Focal K2Ps and I was wondering if anybody has any experience with them in a TL. I have heard that the tweets can get harsh when bouncing off of the windshield, but I have not idea - I have them mounted in the top of the doors currently.

If it matters, I will run them active on a JL 450/4. I imagine that the 6.5s will have a bit of rattle at first like they do in my accord, but I can work that out.

I would also welcome any opinions about other types of higher end components on a higher-end amp.

Thanks in advance.

If you plan to run active, why not get a pair of raw drivers from partsexpress or madisound?

Makes no sense to buy components to go active.

What you need to know about them? I had them before upgrading to the Utopia's.

I heard a few people say that the tweets are bloodcurdlingly harsh when bounced off of the dash and I wanted to ask. I can get a different set if they will stink. I also understand that harshness is a matter of opinion and that nobody may be able to answer my question.

I have them in an accord currently in the top of the doors by the mirror and I think that they sound great. Do you know if I can expect the same with them up front?

I do run them active with a 450/4, so I can gain/adjust them pretty well.

Did they sound good in your Acura. If you can tell a difference between K2 and Utopia, then you might be the right person to ask.

Great speakers with a great amp. I am a focal dealer. As long as everything is crossover correctly the sound will be increadable. However this may be hard to accomplish with a factory radio ( guessing cuz you have a 3G). Get a cleansweep or a req-5 to have better control over your sound. I like my tweets mounted in the doors as well

I guess that I will try them in the dash before I hole-saw the door. At least the tweets look good in the door if I do have to cut it up. The only real issue with cutting it up is that I will keep the K2s if I ever sell the car and nobody wants an open hole in their door.

Yes, I will try and keep the factor stereo as long as I can...

...maybe I will start the install this weekend. I wish that the 450/4 was half as big.

Another tip for you, when we do cars for sound competition we hook up the tweeters with really long speaker wire and cheap double sided tape so you can positon the tweeters in the best position for you. Easy way to find the best spot with out cutting holes.

my boston pro 60 tweeter are in the door. Male a hole but problably will buy some cheap tweeter and remove my component they day i need to sell my car, the crossover are inside the panels and the panels are dynamat completly. The boston don't sound good if you place the tweets to far from the woofer. they do sound so clean and amazing, and having then in this position don't sound hash at all. i have the tweeter on their higher brightness (0, and not -2 or -4) plus a little tembling on the desk to 4+ and they sound just perfect.

i tried different locations and they were to hash all over the de place while facing.

They sounded real good in the TL, Make sure you deaden up the doors really good. You can't really compare the K2's to the Utopia lines. I have the Utopia's run off of a bitone.1 currently. The K2's are great speakers but not superior to the Utopia line. That being said the really why I upgraded to the Utopia's was because of the 3''. I can tell you I will never run another 2 way component set after this set.

People have different tastes in brightness. Focal's has a "in your face" sound to them. Hope that helps

I am going to do it.... just not yet.

First is a 12" Q in custom fiberglass and 1000/1 (maybe, not sure yet). I might go with a different amp that is physically smaller. I think that I have a couple Brutus in the basement chilling out if one of those will fit better. I am not sure where I am going to mount a 20" amp... 14" seems easier to fit.

I had a chance to buy some Utopia Be last year on my local Craigslist - 1 week old supposedly with box and paperwork, but no receipt. Guy started at 1000 and went down to 750 and I didn't do it. I probably should have, but I didn't trust the guy without the receipt.

Thanks for the reply.

Man even though you didn't have a receipt you could've jus tried each speaker out to make sure they are functional. For 750 that was a steal If its the Be Kit no.7. If its for the old utopias thats way too much. You figure, the Be Tweeters alone are worth 700 already.

I was more worried about them being stolen. Even without the receipt, I would have expected him to tell me the store in town where he bought them.
