Escort 8500 smart cord

I have a problem with the smart cord in the TL. Sometimes when it is very cold it seems as though it takes awhile for it to power up. When I say cold I'm talking about below 20 degrees. Anyone have that problem. Also, it seems as though the connection into the cigarette lighter is loose because if you touch the smartcord the whole unit shuts off. Usually don't have the problem but I notice that when you move the smart cord around in the jack it come off and on. Is this the fault of the smart cord or with the Jack. I'm not wanting to hard mount it but I'm trying to see where the problem could be and if anyone else is having the same problem. TIA

I ripped my smart cord apart. Doesn't really get very cold in CA so couldn't tell you. Ripped apart as in, took it apart and used its parts to hardwire to my car :P

I have had the same problem, I just pushed the smartcord in a little harder and that seemed to have cleared up the problem. Come the spring I'll be hardwiring it in. If interested in hard wiring do a search a couple of people have posted different concepts to hardwiring their 8500. Actually come to think of it they are posted in the garage.

Mounting Location of Escort 8500 X50

I'm curious as to where everyone is mounting their radar detectors as mine arrives in a few hours. Anyone using the visor as a mounting option with a visor clip? I'm leaning towards this as I strive for clean installs with no wires dangling around. Any pictures? Thanks.

The best place to mount the radar is low on the windshield. When you use the visor your not protecting yourself to good from the sides and the rear, there is a sensor on top of the unit that you'll be blocking

Click on the following links for both low and high mounting options:

This Link is how to hardwire low on the windshield

and this link is how to hardwire high on the windshield.
