DVD titles that are worth money over CD

I decided to share detailed experience with DVDs I bought.
Most important reason we would spend money on DVD instead of CD is to hear center channel(vocal coming from center speaker but not from rear speakers). So you actually feel that you are in middle of band.

1. Usher - 8701 [Experience: 2/3 , Value:3/3]
Half of tracks use center channel. The other half sounds like CD. It is one of lowest priced DVD I could find along with R Kelly Chocolate Factory and Alicia Keys. A must have R&B album.

2. Shania Twain - UP [Experience: 3/3 , Value: 3/3]
All tracks utilize center channel. Awesome sound from front seats. Rear passengers can barely hear lyrics. It is low to mid priced. If you listen to country, this is it.

3. Faith Hill - Cry [Experience: 2/3 , Value: 2/3]
None of tracks utilize center channel as much as other DVDs. It sounds similar to CD but it has much better resolution and a bit of seperation between front and rear speakers. It is mid priced. Recommended pop DVD.

4. Eagles - Hotel California [Experience: 3/3, Value: 2/3]
Most tracks utilize center channel. Sounds fairly good but it could use a bit more resolution. Maybe at the time it wasn't recorded as high resolution. High priced. I would like few more tracks(it has less than 10 tracks) Recommended 80s album.

5. Jr. Washington George - Winelight [Experience: 3/3, Value : 2/3]
All tracks utilize center channel but tracks are repetitive. High priced and only has few tracks. A great jazz DVD.

My next shopping list
Staind - 14 days of grace
Fourplay - Fourplay
3doors down - away from the sun

i think that he is talking about the DVD-Audio ones and you put them into the 6-disc changer. Nothing else goes in the trunk one except for the Navi DVD.

The trunk DVD reader is only for the Nav dvd only and does not play any kind of media other than that.

By far, Linkin Park - Reanimation is the best DVD-A i own. each song makes unique use of all 5 speakers, as well as the sub. if you're into Linkin Park or likes, get this. actually get it anyway

I like linkin park but I wasn't impressed with remix they did on reanimation. I like original "in the end" better. Well I think I am gonna try it out anyway because there are only so many DVD titles. Thanks for sharing comments.

dont know where you guys get DVD-A's but circuit city has a whole bunch on their website.....about 415 according to their site...

here is a link to get you started....on the right side, click on SACD/DVD-Audio Discs, then scroll down and click search all DVD-Audio. it should come up with all DVD-A's in alphabetical order, or you can search by title, or artist....

Try holding the SCAN & REPEAT buttons if the disc has an alternate group with a higher resolution - I know the Eagles has a 192Khz track that sounds excellent - albeit 2 channel audio only, but still hi-rez. Enjoy.

And here's a link to a thread (as several links in it) with other recommended DVD-Audio disks.

Thanks for the link. I've just ordered yet another copy of "Brothers in Arms". So now I'll have the cassette, CD, and DVD-audio.

Well at least they don't take up a lot of room.

Crap. There are only about 100 titles I can find in Canada yet most of them are online. I went bestbuy & futureshop(Canadian subsidary of bestbuy) and they only have 50 titles in store. Source(Canadian sub of circuit city) doesnt carry any DVDAs yet.

Bigman606, I will try high resolution right now after I write this post. I tried it before and couldn't figure out how to make it work. I tried to hold but doesnt seem to be doing anything. I must be bad at timing.

I am creating ISO copies of DVDs I bought. I tried on verbatim DVD+R DL (the cheapest brand name I Could find at about $5 per disc) and TL didn't wanna play any song. I am going to try verbatim DVD-R DL ( a bit more money) and see how that goes.

Yeah, hold both buttons and you'll hear a confirmation beep and see the display switch to the 2nd Group setting.

When do I start holding buttons? when it says " DVD x load" on display?
I tried again.. I'm either doing it too early or too late

Actuary, thanks for posting your impressions/reviews on the discs you have. Great idea, but it will probably evolve into another "favorite DVD-A disc or favorite track" thread. There are a number of threads on this topic and the last one to garner a number of posts is "Best DVD-A Music in Your Collection".

You mentioned Grover's Winelight disc is high priced. I paid $11.95 for my DVD-A copy. Check out Digital Eyes for DVD-A discs. FYI, Winelight was originally released in June 1980 as an LP and the CD was released in Oct 1990. Pretty much his breakthrough album and earned two Grammy Awards, for "Best Jazz Fusion Recording" and "Best R&B Song" for "Just the Two of Us." I know a couple of folks who paid about $20 for the import version of the CD back in the late 80's.

I beleive you can do it at any time even while the disc is playing. If nothing changes, then that particular disk may not have any other groups.

I got winelight at cost + 10% for C$20. Where as usher 8701 is retail priced at 19.99. So it was relatively high

DIDO Live gets my vote !!!!!

Dido Live in 5.1, it blows it away ... OMG ... freakin awesome!!!

One of the best that I have heard ....

FYI: This is not available in DVD-A.... BUT, if your somewhat computer savy, extract the 5.1 audio from the Dido Live DVD and make your own DVD-A....

We have this one in the TL. I agree, in the backseat, it sounds like crap but in the front seat, it's impressive. Worth the money, IMO.
