DVD Player vs. HD MultiMedia???

I like the idea of the DVD player but then along came the HD multimedia which can store alot of files for playback....installation for the DVD player might be a little more expensive than the HD MultiMedia...Pros and Cons please!!!

Well no one has installed the multimedia player yet. Datmrman is planning on installing today and my turn is next weekend. I think you are wrong about the dvd player being more expensive though. The media player its self is say $90 + hard drive of your choice (say 80gig) $80 + charger $15 = $185. Not bad considering you don't have to buy dvd's, rent them - rip them - put them on the drive. Wait a few days for datmrman to post his opinions on the system.

Also might want to move this to Audio discussion.

I figured it's a general topic...sorry

but about the price of the product...I know the HD is cheaper...but what I mentioned was the installation process...I take it that every one would like a nice clean look that is done from a professional installer.

There really wouldn't be a difference in installation costs. Both units would need power ran to them - both need rca's ran to them - both units need to be custom fabbed somewhere in your car.

But back to the cheaper thing, I was saying the DVD player is a cheaper route than the Multimedia player! HD $185 > DVD $100

Sweet deal. I would have bought the 3.5 version if I know that I had the possibility of running an IR reciever so I could hide the unit. Didn't find that out till after I ordered it. I love how you can get massive HD in the 3.5" size for cheap. I'm just going to get 1 80gig 2.5" for movies and 1 20 gig for music and pictures.

Do you have a thread with pics of your setup Raheel?

FuZionBreeZe, I'll try to be objective here. Here are some general comparisons.

DVD Player Pros:
  • Insert a DVD and press play
  • Most players nowadays have MP3 and JPG support so you can listen to music and have a slideshow of your pictures on a personal CD.
  • CD-R/RW, DVD-RW/+R/-R support so you can make your own.
  • Simple, easy to use. Kids know how to control it.

Hard Drive Media Player Pros:
  • Store multiple types of media without having to swap disks.
  • Quickly update your compilation by connecting to your computer.
  • Portable. Use it as a media player in the car or home theater, or as a storage device for the computer.
  • No laser needed to read disks, so less to no skip.
  • Firmware upgradable.

DVD Player Cons:
  • Creating your own compilation requires not only a computer, but also software and a CD/DVD burner.
  • Unless you have access to DVDs (buy/rent), its rarely used to play video.

Hard Drive Media Player Cons:
  • Requires media files in a supported format. If you don't have media in a supported format, you will need to spend time converting/ripping.
  • Requires some computer know how (to rip/convert).

As you can see, both have advantages that just depends on the person. Hopefully, this helps you figure out which "person" you are. Good luck!
