DVD MP3 Disc?

Is it possible to burn a bunch of MP3s on a DVD and have the unit read it on an 07 TL?

I'm finding that I don't have enough space on a CD to fit all the songs that I want!

The new '07 is supposed to read MP3's. The 04-06 TL couldn't.

The TL's stereo will not read a DVD unless it's in DVD-A format. So it's not possible to put MP3 files on a DVD. It will spit it out with a format error.

This is possible. Someone made a program that will burn DVD-A discs on the forum. It's actually just at the bottom of the posts if you scroll down a bit:

That would be Adobeman. Using the GUI will convert MP3s to WAV files and then convert them to a DVD-A format in the form of an ISO image. The image is then burned onto a DVD disc (-R) and voila, DVD-A ... ya gotta read the entire thread.

Thanks for the help everyone. I guess I have to stick to CDs then. On an offshoot, do any of you know if a CD-RW will work? (I highly doubt it, but it would be awesome!)

I have an 05 but I'm going to go with AMIC's saying a data DVD with mp3s on it will not play.

But, if you use my scripts you will actually get less songs on the DVD-A since they need to be converted to wav prior to burning. So you will only get about 80 songs per DVD-A (on a single layer DVD-R). Depending on you mp3 encoding you might get hundreds on a CD that the 07 TL will play.

If you are into mp3s then the best bet is probably an iPod (or similar) directly wired to your HU. I think the 07 even has an input jack for it. Then you get thousands of songs in the car (or anywhere) without burning a thing. The best part about that is it frees up the HU for 6 really cool, multi-channel DVD-As !

Sorry, I am missing something here?
The '07 TL brochure says it is MP3 enabled. Doesn't this mean you can burn a bunch of MP3's to CD or DVD and play them??

mp3's can only be burned to cd's if you want the 07 TL to play them...there's no such thing as an mp3 dvd...only mp3 cd...

and i can get about 120 songs per mp3 cd...how many songs are you trying to burn to one disc, pika? 120 songs is plenty for me on one disc...

and i wouldn't use a cd-rw to burn my mp3 discs...the compatibility isn't as great as cd-r discs is....so i just stick with cd-r discs when it comes to burning music...

It would be interesting to test the sound quality difference of MP3's from CD vs Adobeman's DVD-A method (converted from MP3).

Sound quality difference would be negligible.

DVD-As can also only fit about 120 songs. CD-RW would probably work. It wouldn't hurt to try. What's the worst that happens? You burn a CD-RW, it doesn't work, you erase it and reburn with CD-R

you can also buy a 50 pack of cd-r discs cheaper than a 10 pack of cd-rw discs...make sense? i was just informing him that cd-r discs would probably play better so he doesn't waste time burning, erasing, re-burning...

I have tested both DVD and CD-RW on my 07TL.

DVD's won't play.

CD-RW will play

I like using the mp3 over DVD-A because of the track info supplied on the MP3.

I've also copied a few CD's and, even if the original CD didn 't contain CD-TEXT, Nero will supply that info when I copy so I get song and album info on copied (for backup pruposes only) CD's, works well with compilation CDs as well, sweet

As a few members have stated, the TL supports audio CD disks and with the introduction of the '07s, MP3 CD disks.

As for DVD, the only support is DVD-Audio disks. Although many songs can be placed on each disk, this is not to be confused with MP3 DVD disks. MP3 disks are basically data disks that contains MP3 files, whereas DVD-Audio (similar, but different to DVD-Video) is a very structured data disk containing certain file types (AOB, IFO, BUP, etc) in the AUDIO_TS directory. With the help of Adobeman's programs, you can convert your MP3 to DVD-Audio format.

As for media types, I have had no problems using CD-Rs and CD-RWs in both the headunit and navi DVD drive (for navi hacks). DVD-Rs tend to be more compatible than DVD+Rs. I don't remember if I've tried DVD-RWs yet.

Nope. I tried it already. Needs to be DVD-A, but that isnt so bad, it requires much more work on the user side but you can make using a 4.7g DVD 7 hours and 15 minutes of music. Too bad the MP3's dont play from DVD.

Thanks! That's exactly the info that I was looking for. I guess I'm off to buy 2 CD-RWs! No need for 5GB of storage when I can just move files around!

So it appears both ways yield about 7.5 hours per disc:
DVD with 4.7 GB = 7.15Hrs
CD w/ MP3's, 120 songs = 8 Hrs

Stick in 6 discs and you've almost got enough music to get you across the country!

maybe you should just put a 10gb hard drive in your dash and never have to worry about burning discs again...
