DVD Installation - Best location / power issues
DVD Installation - Best location / power issues
Hey guys,
Finally got the USA Spec and Dom's PNP unit installed. Very happy with both for the most part. I've got my iPod hooked up to Dom's unit to watch my video podcasts and music videos on the navi screen. Next step is to hook-up a DVD player. I've got a few questions:
I'd be curious to see some other installs. After looking through the 3G Garage I saw one under-seat install, another glove compartment, etc.
Any input at all would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks!

- Where is the best location for a single DIN DVD player? I was hoping to mount it in the center console arm-rest compartment but after looking there I'm not sure it would fit.
- Not sure how I should power the DVD player. I tapped into the center console arm-rest cigarette adapter for Dom's unit and was thinking of tapping that again for the DVD player. Is this a good/bad idea? Also -- where would I ground it? Can I tap the other plug going into the cigarette adapter as a ground?
I'd be curious to see some other installs. After looking through the 3G Garage I saw one under-seat install, another glove compartment, etc.

I'm also in the process of getting this project together for my car. From my investigation, only very few DVD units will fit into the area below the nav screen, which I feel is the best and most natural spot. I'd say even fewer would fit into the center console armrest spot because of that funny shape that's inside that bay.
Take a look at slimmyjimmy's installation. That's about the best you're going to get - he used a Myron and Davis unit. You could probably put any old DVD under the seat, and just about any in the glove box, too, but I'm not a big fan of either of those locations. I guess it's all about what's comfortable for you, though.

You do realize with those devices (Dom's and USA Spec), you can only have one aux source at a time, so you'll have to unplug the Ipod cable and plug in the DVD A/V cables correct?
SlimmyJimmy did a good job with his, but getting a DVD player in there is nothing short of a hack job... seriously, you have to hack up a lot back there, and mash up the HVAC lines that feed your back seat to make it work... and there are only like 2 DVD player, of questionable reliability, that you can do this with.
Other than that, yor typical under the eat or in the glovebox is all that you can do.
Other neat places I've seen them mounted: (yet awkward to get to:

Honestly, for as much as you'll actually USE the DVD player, the Glovebox is more than adequete. Unless you have plastic forming skill and can me a cusomt mount, I'd stick it int he gkovebox.

Do you need a location where you can change discs while driving? I'm thinking about putting in a DVD player too. Ideally, it could fit somewhere below radio controls. Stupid question, but how would you control the DVD? via remote control? I saw a post of someone integrating a carpc w/ the touchscreen, but that seemed like a lot of work.
What I would love to have also, is a DVD player that could play mp3's recorded on DVD-R. So, keep us up to date on any findings.

I'd like to have it in a location where I can easily access it to change the DVD while driving. I'd also like this location to be concealed as I do not feel it will look good anywhere that's not concealed. I am seriously thinking about the glove box now. Where could I tap into a ground there, though? What has everyone else done?
