Dvd-a: Doa?
Dvd-a: Doa?
I've come to the conclusion that DVD-A is dead as a format. The various online sites I visit to see what's new coming out have nothing in the way of new DVD-As. They do, however, have a fair number of new SACDs coming out.
It seems like DVD-A should be a winner, since everyone has DVD players. Alas, I guess I'm stuck with the 5 DVD-As I have for my TL.

thats what a lot of people said about DVD when it first came out, now its one of the biggest things. Cars are just coming out with DVD-A players, so you'll see the market growing. Esp with the introduction of dual disc, DVD-A is here to stay
This is a very cool site with lots of DVD-A info, plus a COMPLETE list of all DVD-A's released since 2000 by year.

Remember, Sony is PAYING part of the tab for UMG's big releases this coming week (Elton Johns, Eric Claptons), so you will not see DVD-A's of these titles until at least March. That's in their contract with Sony.
As for WB and the DVD-A group, who knows what they are up to, and why they are sitting on so many titles that are ready to go, and even pressed. They need to clear up the crap with the publishers and get on the boat, or it will be gone.
We'll see how these DualDiscs are accepted by the public. Remember, just because it's a DualDisc, does NOT mean it will have a DVD-A track. It may only have a Dolby Digital DVD-V track, and if it does it will NOT play in the TL. You can be sure the SONY DualDiscs will not have DVD-A, so you will be stuck with the CD side in the TL (if it plays)
What a mess!

With the intro of the DualDisc, hopefully the public will open up to this new format. Let's hope the record companies don't get too greedy and screw it up.
These are excerpts from an article in Sound and Vision Magazine by Brian C. Fenton
Even Sony BMG, one of the original backers of SACD now supports DualDisc along with Warner, Universal and EMI. However, Sony will offer surround sound via DVD-Video, not DVD-A and will still use SACD as their high res platform. DualDisc releases from 5.1 Entertainment Group planned for December will include Blondie's The Curse of the Blonde to Robert Cray's Time Will Tell. Some of the major labels like Warner and Universal will only have a few titles. Simple Plan's Still Not Getting Any , Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral and Miles Davis's Kind of Blue.
There still seems to be a legal problem because of a patent holder for another CD/DVD flipper disc called the DVD Plus. They also made note that to accomodate everything on a disc that's only 1.5 mm thick, the DualDisc's CD side will be limited to a playing time between 60 and 65 min.
The subject of disc thickness bring up their biggest concern: compatatibility. A spokesman for Philips - co-inventor with Sony of both the CD and SACD - confirms that the DualDisc willnot carry the CD logo because of the depth of the CD side is not up to spec. The DVD Forum mandated a depth of 0.6 mm for the DVD side, which left 0.9 for the CD side. But the CD spec requires a minimum depth of 1.1 mm - "a huge differenc," says the spokesman. And he claims that, in tests by Philips, fingerprints and dust resulted in a 70% failure rrate when playing the CD side of DualDiscs.

FYI - Take a look at the '05 Cadillac STS. They too have standardized on the DVD-A format for their Bose 5.1 sound system. Other than CD, no other disc formats are available from Cadillac either.

I keep checking Amazon's DVD-A selections and never see anything new...
Amazon has a poor selection of DVD-A's, so they are not IMHO a good barometer. DVD Empire keeps a good new & future releases section and has a good selection (although not the best prices). When they have something in stock, DeepDiscountDVD usually has the best prices and they have around 300 DVD-A's listed.
I do agree that the number of new releases is very very thin.

in my opinion.
Personally, I would like to see more elctronica in dvda format.

Best Buy
I stopped in Best Buy today to look at their selection of dvd-a cd's. It's better than it was a few months ago and they offer about the same titles as dvdempire. I picked up "The Who, Tommy". It sounds unbelievable. It's my first dvd-a and it won't be my last.
The BB & CC stores closest to me pulled their inventory ..... Have yet to check on dual discs at these places ...... I ocassionally go to Fry's to check out their sale items, but some of the clerks there have absolutely no clue. I prefer using the online sites mentioned in previous posts.

DVD-A - Dead and stinking....
After spending the afternoon online looking for a specific DVD-A, I realized that there are fewer places on the net to buy DVD-A's than the last time I looked a few months ago. Circuit City no longer sells them in the store. No big loss there, they had only 25 or so and they were stacked on the floor last time I visted.
Best Buy had a display behind a support pole making it nearly impossible to browse. Tower records online store had the best selection. http://www.towerrecords.com/
I would love to have Pink Floyd, Ray Charles and more classic recordings but the current selection is very limited.
IMHO, better buy the DVD-A's you want now. Despite more cars coming out with the format, the DVD-A is a goner..
