DVD audio?
Next time you're at the dealer, I'm sure they would be more than happy to play you the disc in the car. They did for me and it helped close the sale.
Basically, DVD-A is a multichannel-capable (up to 5.1 surround) format that boasts far higher resolution than conventional CDs.

Two new DVD-A's are out this week, however. The Mark Knopfler "Sailing to Philadelphia" album was released in a "Dual Pack", a CD with a DVD-A, and today the Rob Thomas (of Matchbox 20) DualDisc was released. This DualDisc is on Atlantic, so the DVD side is DVD-A!

oblio, thanks for the info on the Mark Knopfler release. BTW, the Rob Thomas disc is on sale @CC for $10.

personally i would have rather seen SACD supported instead of DVD-A, there are far more titles and quality titles on SACD than DVD-A.
but i think we can get some more use and time out of our DVD-A players with the DualDisc format coming in...

Hawhyen51,
You're welcome (! )
DVD-A does not need Dolby Digital or DTS. DVD-A is a "pure" lossless format, which can be MLP encoded to save space on the disc, which is required for 5.1 audio at 24/96.
Dolby Digital and DTS are encoding schemes that drop a lot of info in the encoding. There are various degrees of encoding, but either one of these will be a compromise to the audio quality heard.
DTS does have a new format, DTS 24/96, however it is unfortunately not used on DualDIscs at this point.
Remember, a Dolby Digital or DTS track can be played on ANY DVD player, a DVD-Audio track must be played on a DVD-Audio player.
PS - Although the "quantity" of SACDs available is 4 times the amount of DVD-A's, many of these SACDs are stereo only, or from the far East, or Classical. When you compare the list of "rock/pop" titles of both formats, they are fairly equal.
OK - question re: dualdisks.
is the (DVD) side of a dualdisk just a DVD-A plus possibly videos and whatnot? or some other format? or is this a situation where it will depend on what company puts the disk out?
that being asked, will dualdisks work in our system on the DVD side? and will we see the benefit?

DualDiscs are a disaster because there is no standard. Unfortunately, SONY is releasing the most DualDiscs, and since their SACD format is the "competition" to DVD-A, they are not releasing any DualDiscs with DVD-A on the DVD side, only Dolby Digital.
Some DualDiscs released by other companies (UMG, Atlantic) are putting DVD-A tracks on the DVD side of DualDiscs.
You have to look at each disc. If you see Sony, Epic, or other affiliated labels, you will only see a Dolby Digital logo, there will be no DVD-A or Advanced Resolution Sound logos. These are NOT playable in the TL.
