Dolby PLII - better when turned off

When I turn on Dolba PLII, the sound is muted and poor quality. Any suggestions?

With the Dolby PLII system, the front two speakers provide the some of the mids and the center takes the higher up mids and tweeters get the highest notes. The rears remain inactive unless there are some high level mids in the range, like in techno. The sub gets all the low notes. SO basically, only 4 of the 6 speakers are providing different ranges of sound. Without it, all 6 provide all ranges of sound. The sound will sound louder with it off, but with it on, it distributes the sound to make it sound fuller, but at the cost of volume.

Multichannel synthesis of stereo inputs is a "black magic" thing. No one algorithm will work on all kinds of sources. That's why top producers are payed well to mix multichannel tracks.

If you are up for burning your own DVD-A discs then play around with the Adobinizer. (see my sig block for link). It does a "poor mans" stereo to multichannel conversion. Some folks think it does an OK job. I found it kind of variable. I got the best results using music more like jazz than rock. I wrote it before the PLII was available in the TL.

Its a feature on the 07+ TL's, go into the audio menu where you see bass, center, etc, it should be right beneath or above the Speed Volume setting

So, without the PLII, does the center speaker still put out sound if there is no DVD-A playing (i.e. radio, XM, CD)?
