Does the 04 really have a speaker in the middle of the dash?

While servicing my '03 in Saturday, I looked at some '04's and saw the speaker grill in the middle of the dash on top. Is this really a speaker?... if so the is some throwback to the shitty design of a 1983 Chrysler. Cheap, Cheap pissy ass design.

I couldn't believe it when I saw it. What a dumb place to put a speaker.... the sun will eat it up in two years and with its screwed-up location, it will be impossible to change on your own. Forget about a to-go box leaking across it.

I'd buy a '04RL for 2K more than a '04TL in a New York minute.

5.1 DVD-audio requires a center speaker. the dash is the perfect place for it.

it is a speaker.. it is a center channel speaker, as outlined in a Dolby 5.1 system.... its a perfectly fine place to put a speaker, if direct sunlight was an issue, they would have never put speakers in the rear deck of a car as they are also exposed to direct sunlight

.
What about the million other cars out there that have speakers mounted in the dash and the rear deck? Those are exposed to just as much sunlight as the center speaker in the TL 3rd Gen's.

And who places there "to go" box on the top of the dash? You must accelerate like a Puch moped because any other car would send the "to go" box flying.

Someone's a bit grumpy this morning. Burn your toast? Step on the cat? Behind in grading papers?

If you prefer a RL (real limo) over the TL (sport sedan), go for it. Good luck if you can find one for $37k. Grab it. It is probably more suitable for college professors and mature persons who remember 1983 Chryslers.

actually when I purchased my TL, my parents were with me and my father was eyeing the RL, the sales man offered 38K for a brand new 2004 (since sales are lack luster, an 8K discount off sticker)

You eat at the restaurant and don't finish your plate and you take the rest home in a doggie bag/to-go box.

Yep, cheap pissy-ass design. The stereo in the TL sucks. Don't even bother listening. Even if it did work well, a box of KFC or Chinese takeout on the dash would block the sound and drip grease down in there. Besides, I'd hate to disuade a potential RL buyer. Someone has to buy the last of the 04's.

why the hell would someone put that on the dash?

You have a box of kleenex on the back deck too?

Hey how do the drippings work compared to Vinylex?

Everytime I read topics in this forum becomes a haven for rants and complaints about our TLs. Such as, flaw in design of the remote auto adjusting seats, speaker wrong placement, HID could be designed better, loose leather seats, what's next? Cupholder can't hold my coffeee cup? To those people who won't stop bitchin about the TLs design and expecting too much for what they are getting for less that 35K car.... here :thefinger :rocketwho !

I have not a clue in the world why anyone would place the to-go box on their dash. As stated above, you would have to drive like a 97 year-old great grandmother with no legs to have the to-go box not slide off of the dash.

If I do bring home food from a restaurant, I usually place it in my trunk and have my girlfriend/friend remind me it's in there when I get home. Either that or I'll have her hold it.

or leave the leftover salmon in the back seat, forgetting about it while the sun ripens it up a little bit.

I have to believe you are kidding and the above statement is just "tongue and cheek." If you are in fact serious, then my mistake. It is had to tell sometimes on this forum. Assuming you are indeed seriuous, that seems like a rather silly reason to pick one car over another, but to each there own. The RL has other attributes that might make it a better choice for someone. As stated above, 5.1 DVD-audio has to have a front center channel. It is a necessity of the sound quality Acura was trying to achieve.

you must be one of the more un-educated members of this forum. i do not know your profession but simple research on your part would have indicated that the car comes with 5.1 surround sound. the center channel is placed exactly where the 5.1 specification is intended. if you were setting up a home stereo would you place the center channel anywhere else? another great feature about this car is the voice navigation and bluetooth integration both of which employ this center channel as a main voice speaker. if you listen to any 5.1 movie you will notice that almost all dialog is outputted through the center channel. please think before you speak and you will find yourself looking less like an ass.

i dont think sunlight is an issue. the glass has film to block UV.

5.1 is just the # of channels available. i believe there are 8 speakers in the TL.

Anyone so interested in speaker placement should know a little something about creating "soundstage" in a multichannel environment. Placing the center speaker on an entirely different plane (both vertically and horizontally) than the left and right main channel speakers would destroy the system's imaging.

I'll gamble here and say the Grammy-winning producer who designed the system knows more about this subject than almost anyone here.

Well when she forgets to close the sunroof and it rains, tell me how that 5.1 Super DVD/BetaMax shit sounds then... again a cheap, pissy design.

Acura was offering $3500 to dealers to move 04' RLs until just recently. You could have bought one for under $38K new

I think this pretty much sums it up. Its one thing to be ignorant, its quite another to come onto a board and parade your ignorance loudly and clearly so that hundreds of people can observe it.

It is better to be silent and thought a fool, than to speak and prove you surely are one. This old cliche applies in spades to Professor...

I don't see any work for Honda in terms of speaker placement in the TL. And as far as "sound imaging" it varies greatly if a window or sunroof is down or even if someone sits in the car... the resonating frequency is not constant.

It might sound great, but I still think the placement detracts from the overall smoothness of the dash.

Guess the Mark Levinson sound system in the Lexus GS300/430 is a cheap pissy ass design as well. Mine had the speaker in the middle. What do those stupid Japanese luxury automakers know anyway? :rocketwho
