Disk read error
My 08 navigation now tells me I have a disk read error. I didnt take it to the dealer but I called and they said it could be that the system is faulty and it caused a scratch causing 700 in damage. For a new cd and to fix the system in the trunk. I think I just need a disk. Anyone have this problem before? Thanks.

take your disc out. is there a universal circular scratch covering the bottom of the disc? if so, your nav drive is failing. a mechanism inside the navi will slowly scratch your disc as it spins and over time, you'll get a disc read error.
you can send it to alpine for $158 and they'll replace your unit and give you a new disc as well. don't go to the dealer unless you're under warranty and they offer to cover everything for under $158.

1) Check or Money Order for $158 to Alpine Electronics
2) Return the unit to:
ALPINE ELECTRONICS OF AMERICA
2012 ABALONE AVE UNIT D
TORRANCE CA 90501
3) Include contact info, phone #, and brief description of problem
4) INCLUDE NAVI DISC

^ Good info Aaron. I need to do this soon to mine also. To the OP, definitely include the navigation disc, even if they tell you not to if you call them. They should send you a new one as the scratched disc is somewhat useless now...and I've read reports of some users getting the newest versions. I hope I'm that lucky
Also, there's a vid on Youtube I believe about how to take out the nav. drive in the trunk. Pretty easy from what I hear. I suggest tossing it into a USPS flat-rate box for $5-6.

Not to Hijack the thread but besides the disc read error that deantl is describing, is static instead of the voice coming from the speaker when using the voice navigation a symptom of the navi DVD drive going bad? All connections appear to be in place in both the headunit and back in the drive in the trunk.
