Custom Radar Detector Display

GOAL: I'm currently running the Escort Passport Max which has an optional display/mute button controller (SmartCord Live). I want to mount it somewhere that I can easily reach the mute button but at the same time I can still see the alert button when it flashes (I run it on full dark mode at night)

PAST WORK: I know someone on azine mounted the escort display/mute controller in the blank section near VSA on/off switch.

https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-audio-bluetooth-electronics-navigation-94/diy-escort-radar-detector-direct-wire-install-56k-take-caution-641840/

It got me thinking...

MY IDEA: I wanted to relocate the hazard on/off switch to that same blank section near the VSA on/off button. I wanted to then order in a replacement hazard on/off button and build a a custom mute and alert button into it so it is clearly in my driving view and I have easy assess to the mute button.

I was curious of everyone's thought on the ideas. Has anyone ever relocated that hazard switch button?

Thanks for your ideas!

Thats a pretty sweet idea actually. Only thing aesthetic wise is that you would have a green and red LED front and center - wouldn't match and would be decently brighter than all the other interior lights. I had no idea where to put my smart hardwired cord - I actually velcroed it to the third right most gauge cluster oval, has been working fine for me.

you bring up a good point! You can actually swap out the led for any color and using resistors dim the lights. See below

Ah well sounds like you have it figured out then. Im just not as handy so I don't think I'd trust myself haha. But that does look good provided you can make a good bezel for the space around the indicator to match the grey interior.

here's a third gen TL radar mute indicator install:

as you can see, he relocated the VSA button to the right and put the mute button within easier access

hope your plan works!!

one issue i think you'll run into is wiring.
i bet the stock wiring for the hazard switch is bundled up near the HVAC. tough time to fish it through all the way to the drivers footwell area

Yea I agree. Its gonna be a pain in the tail to relocate the bundle near the HVAC. I'll post pictures when I'm done. I hoping in the next 2 weeks!

^^ that's my setup haha, nice pull justnspace! I looked at a few options for the radar and to be honest the spot you're looking to go seems inconvenient. The spot where the blank button is is pretty close to the steering wheel or if your arm is on the door arm rest. Not sure if you have a manual but if so that would take away your shifting hand. Seems like a long reach to silence the alarm.

Plus I like that the alarm blinking goes off and my wife and other passengers can't see it. Just some food for thought, I like that you're looking for something new and willing to look at options. Good luck!

some basic cutting of the spare button and wedging the electronics in there, it's held up well for over 2 years and i love the location!

Ok I so I got really inspired and changed my idea. So I want to leave hazard light alone. I want to open the smartcord box and relocate the 2 led lights and mount them on the plastic cover that snaps on over the speed cluster. There are two little triangle looking empty spaces. One below and between the rpm and speed and the other below and between the rpm and gas gauge. That should be simple, no problem. The next part I think it going to be tricky. I want to pull the mute button and place it on the tip of the turn signal/headlight knob. I'm unclear of weather the wiring will be in the actual knob or if I'll run it behind the knob out of sight. The latter would be less ideal but much easier. I'm ordering in a new turn signal/headlight knob just to play around with it and do a feasibility test.

I know the whole thing will be a PITA and prob not worth most people's time but i'll see how it turns out haha
