Controlling aftermarket sub from factory HU

Hey guys,

Have been reading that installing an aftermarket HU is a PIA. Is it possible to control the subwoofer with the stock HU? I know there is a "subwoofer" control on the stock HU, but I don't think it will control an external sub. I already have a sub from my last car, so I plan on leaving the stock on as is.

Thanks!

you want to control your stock subwoofer with the HU or you want to control an aftermarket subwoofer with the HU? both are possible, and easy.

with the aftermarket one...you just splice into the OEM sub harness with a LOC (line-out converter) and connect that to your aftermarket subwoofer.

you will retain factory controls like that. bass/treble/balance/fade whatever.

This. Pull the top trunk liner down and you'll see the hole for the sub. Can't take it out this way, but you can unplug the harness and splice and LOC into it. Run RCA's from the LOC to your sub amp and wallah! Definitely unplug the factory sub btw

Ok, I just bought a Kicker sub and planned on building the box into the rear deck lid, is it completely out of line to try and remove the factory sub?

Depends on how you're going to build the box, what kind of space requirements you need, if you want rattles to consume your car, etc. A 10" or 12" sealed box isn't very big at all....

Well I was just going with a kicker cvr 8", nothing major, I just didn't know how much of a pain it was to get the old sub out and was it worth it.

It'll be a pain if you've never worked in the car and know screw placements, etc as you have to remove the rear seat and pull the B-pillars and rear deck liner. Not "too" bad...but it's harder than just pulling the trunk liner down and unscrewing it lol.

It'll help you to get a little more sound into the cabin..especially if you don't plan to have the ski-pass open. What's your budget and what are you looking to get out of the system??

TM, budget is not an issue, strictly just replacing a blown sub.... I just wanted the experts opinions before I went through the hassle.
