Connecting iPhone to aux port

Connecting iPhone to aux port
I have recently found the aux port in the lower console between the seats. When I plug in my iPhone with the ipod playing I can't select it. When I select aux it reverts to whatever was playing before.
What am I missing?
Do I have to setup the aux port/tell it what devise I'm using?
I have yet to read the manual on this subjuect. I did a quick search and found no info here. I'm thinking it's an obvious miss on my part or broken.
Thanks for any help!

It's the proper plug. I can use it in another car and it's plug and play.
It doesn't seem to work in my 07 TLS. Not a critical part as I am using the XM ($20.00 deal for 5 months plus my 3 months free) and the 6 CD changer.
Due to the setup time involved with the bluetooth phone I thought there "might" some setup needed with an audio device.
