codes

long story short. bought a preowned 05 tl w nav. i do not have original manual, dealer has no record of VIN, and i couldnt find a sticker in the glove box. does anyone know how to get the radio and nav codes w/o taking the radio apart. I dealer was supposed to clear it out when i got it certified but he didn't have any idea how to do it and i didn't have an extra 15 min to spare...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

there is no way to get the codes unless you get them from the dealer or the previous owner...i would think they kept them in the computers...im sure if u called acura they could help you...but i think what most dealers do is if they can't find the codes they just re-flash everything....back to the default settings

yeah, my problem is that when i bought the car, all the info from the previous owner is still in it. i could erase everything but the address book is pin protected. the dealer told me that the only way to get rid of it would be to disconnect the battery, touch the terminals together to discharge the capacitors and hook it all back up. thus, i would need the codes. when they ran my VIN, they had no record. i know the car is from NY, maybe i could search the area, or i could call eveyone in his HFL address book and track the previous owner down JK. they would probably think im a stalker....

Similar thing happened to me but I was able to determine what city the car was purchased in (by the blue tooth saved phone numbers) and got the dealer service guys to call down and retrieve the original codes. They keep that information at the original selling dealer for a short period of time before purging so move fast.

the codes are also listed under one of the covers in the engine bay. however, for some reason, my car's nav code was incorrect so my dealer had to contact acura and they were able to get it. but first check there.

thanks guy for all yur help. i found out that the car was originally purchased at Montclair. so i called down their. i gave them my VIN number, but they said that they didn't have the code. i am about to look under the hood. do you know eactly which panel it is under. I feel that eventually i will have to go to the dealer to have them pull the radio, or do it myself. but it looks kinda hard. thanks for all your help. it pisses me off that they had my car for 3 days and they said that they certified it but nothing was reset when i specifically asked them to do it for me. i wish there was a way to find out the information from the nav screen or the diagnostic screen. that would make the most sense.

this is for the second gen. but its worth a shot:

1. Turn the ignition to "on".
2. Turn the radio off. (make sure u haven't exhausted ur error tries, if you have, disconnect battery, wait 1 min and then check to see if "code" is displayed on radio)
3. Press and hold buttons 1 and 6 down.
4. While holding those two buttons, press the "power" button on the radio.

The unit will display four numbers and then change to another set of four numbers. THAT IS THE SERIAL NUMBER OFF THE BACK OF THE HEAD UNIT! Just call a local dealer and give them that serial number, they can look it up online and tell you the code in seconds! I did it this morning and the guy at customer service saved me $90! I was and still am really pissed that the dealer is doing this to people still when they obviously know that there is a walk around. I would LOVE to call up a local news station and have hidden cameras in on this when the dealer "takes out my head unit" to check that serial number... I can understand a $10 service charge for locating your serial number, no probs there, that's honest money, but when you take out almost a new
