Cigarette lighter extension needed
Cigarette lighter extension needed
Man why did Acura make the cigarette lighter so deep and so against the right side. I'm finding it a challenge to find many adapters that can even slide into the thing. Has anyone else had this trouble and what was their solution? I would prefer not to have extension wires laying all over the place but you can't fit any multiple plugs that I have seen in there.
In fact, my Escort and Valentine chargers barely fit and that is if I put them in sideways.

Here's some links for those adaptors:

Pepboys/Autozone. ~$10 depending on what you want. And run it from your center console, instead of the front console.
To give you an idea of what I did for 2 devices. My cig lighter in the front console has nothing plugged into it. I'm running a extension cable/adapter (w/ 2 plugs) from my center console to 1) radar on window 2) xm receiver to the left of steering wheel.
The wire for the radar is going out of the center console, between the console & passenger seat, behind the trim, and in the crack of the glove box, up to the window. (I never use my glove box, but if you do, you'll have to put the wire back in the crack every once in awhile when you open it.) You could hardwire the detector into the mirror, though. The XM receiver power goes down through the fuse panel, under the door trim, behind the seat (under the mat) and around up between the drivers seat and center console. You can't see any wires. My point is, you can keep it cleaner if you go through the center console.
I basically have this, expect one of those plugs has a 6ft cable attached to it.

center console

2 wires coming out

the plug

side center console on passenger side. (I pulled the wire down a little, just so you could see that it was there)

driver side fuse panel w/ 2nd plug w/ 6ft extension for XM radio

wedged in the glove box (the wire actually does stay in place when you open the box. but every once and awhile it will fall down)

the plug. you can get one that has two plugs w/ only 1 or 2 inches of cable length.

If this made no sense, please forgive me. I tried...

I tried (in fact already owned) the two way split kind from Radio shack. Problem is the extension comes right out to the automatic gear shifter. In other words I wouldn't be able to plug anything in and still put the car in park. The one from the link above "might" have enough lenght and then bend to get it done. We'll see.
For my 06 TL
Jayun...thanks a bunch for the photos...It looks like it took some time to put together and I appreciate it. I am actually using the same splitter as you in the console. However, I am running my Ipod car charger and my cell phone charger up through the little cut through in the upper console area and then just out the little cut in the front. So my Ipod and Cell phone are sitting over the slide piece that would cover drink #2. So no wires there and a place to set the stuff.
A couple of cool things is that when I slide the armrest forward it covers the Nano without hitting it so it is hidden when I park the car. I'm using a cassett adapter which has the wire dropped off to the side by the passenger seat and then coming up straight to the tape deck. So a little wire showing there.
I 'think' I have a solution figured out (as of today) for my radar detector....I've been struggling for that right combination. Here it is.
I'm going to set it up using this unit with my Valetine (seen in this link and wired as in top diagram).
http://www.valentine1.com/MoreInfo/Audio.asp
There is room in the TL to plug in the Valentine car charger and place this remote unit just to the left in the bottom storage area (It's 3" wide after plugging in charger and you only need 2.5"). From there the straight phone wire option (8 feet that comes with it) is run around and under the dash, up by the front of the door, and across the dash (ALL UNSEEN minus the few inches to get from the lighter down to the floor...and no slack). There is enough wire to make it to the left center of the windshield for radar installation.
My only complaint (prior to finding this little remote unit) was that I would have to lean way forward to hit the mute button on the detector. With this new set up the mute button will be easy to hit down by the cig adapter. I will also still be able to easily unplug and remove the radar detector when parking in bad places...so I'm stoked! I hate wires hanging out!
If I learn that the new updated Ipod connection is the better way to go, then I might even invest in that to get rid of the tape deck deal...but until then.
