Burning a DVD-A on a Mac?

I can create a DVD-A disc on my PC using Wavelab, but my PC doesn't have a DVD burner. I do have one on my Mac, though. Does anyone know if I can build the image on my PC and then burn the disc on my Mac? What program can I use on the Mac to do the burn? I have Toast and iDVD. Is it just a simple matter of putting the AUDIO_TS folder on the disc?

Thanks!

A few ideas.

There has got to be an ISO burning program for MAC. I don't have any Macs but my brother burns all kinds of stuff on DVD. If you have any burning programs that burn ISOs of DVD-V then they should handle ISO of DVD-A without issue. Just try the ISO from your PC. All it will cost is a blank and your time

I think just plopping the AUDIO_TS dir and files is less likely to work. Again all it will cost is a blank and your time.

PC Emulator program. Sometimes they are finicky with peripherals. The Mac users I know use them for PC only software if they absolutely need to run it on a mac.

Buy another burner for your PC. They are wicked cheap for the kind you need. A 4x DVD-R drive (if you can find it) would cost peanuts. Make sure you get DVD-R since it is more compatible with the car. These guys for example THis may actually be the simplest in terms of time and effort.

Trust me, I don't mean to be flip or anything like that. The price of DVD blanks has dropped so low that unfortunately "try it" has become a viable alternative to knowing what to do technically. The time factor is the real issue to me. I realize you wan to skip the things that others have tried that don't work. I wish I could be more helpful in that.

I agree with all your points, Mike, and I don't take any of them the wrong way. I think you're correct that the easiest path right now is to order up a DVD-R recorder for my PC. I've been making coasters all morning with my Mac and it's clear I need to upgrade to the newer version of Toast. A DVD burner is likely cheaper anyway.

What kind of Mac?... think you could do a quick drive swap for the testing? The ATA/IDE peripherals are 99% interchangeable.

I'm a Mac user exclusively, although I do own a multimedia PC as well. I don't care for the crappy PC software, and I'm thinking about doing some 'tries' on the Mac as well. Wonder if Toast 6 is going to do it....

At home, my two Macs are Powerbooks with Superdrives (12" and 15"). At work, I have my PC and a MDD dual 1.25 GHz G4 with Superdrive.

I'm thinking the problem I'm having is that Toast 5 insists on including the two invisible files (desktop.db and the other one) and that pisses the TL's player off. Toast 6 apparently has fixed this issue, so I may give that a try, if I justify the $80 upgrade price to myself.

The latest problem is that Wavelab throws an error when I try to save an ISO image. It tells me “Could not start the CD-burning engine to write data-CDs” and won't do it. If I could get this working, I could use the version of Toast I have to burn the disc (I think). I've emailed Wavelab support about the issue to see what they say. So far, I've made four coasters.

Well I know Roxio's Toast 7 now support DVD Music burning (Dolby Digital). I'm gonna test it out tomorrow to see if I can get a music disc to play in my TL.

Follow up: Toast also offers the option 96kHz/24bit PCM.

Follow up from this evening. Tried a hi-res disk and no luck. TL complained and flashed a format error and spit it out. Will try another.

Does Toast 7 allow you to omit the desktop.db and desktop.df files when you burn?

Yes, it omits both files. It puts both a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS file on the DVD. WHen I play it in a regular DVD player it works fine (even provides a nice menu system for each song. I'm going to keep trying - will even contact Roxio for advice.

Success! I finally burned a DVD-A. But, I didn't do it on my Mac. I installed a 48x DVD burner in my PC and used WaveLab. One of these days, though, I will get it working on my Mac as my PC is at my work.

I made an attempt a month ago using Toast Titanium 6 no luck. I hope Toast 7 is able to do it. If anyone has any luck with a Mac please post up.

Cool, sometime just "adding money" is the path of least resistance. Hopefully you got a good deal on the burner for your PC.
I'm sure it will eventually work on your Mac but at least the pressure is off.

ender001,

Were you able to get Toast 7 to burn a DVD-A playable in the TL?

I have sent an e-mail to Minnetonka Audio regarding DiscWelder Bronze and will let everyone know when/if I receive a reply.

I have Bronze for my Mac and I've burned a bunch of DVD-As on my Mac.

Its not the best Mac app ever, but it does the job. Its better for me than the open source one that's out there that you have to run from the terminal.

Will it work with M4a files ripped by iTunes or do I need to re-rip my CDs into WAV files? If so, I will order it now.

Thanks divxz.

Think you are pretty much stuck with .wav.

Thanks.

I think I will wait for iTunes 5. If Apple is serious about this being the "Year of HD", maybe that will include burning DVD-Audio from iTunes.

I wouldn't hold your breath on that one. If DVD Studio Pro can't make DVD-As, I doubt that iTunes 5 would.

I had e-mailed Minnetonka Audio last week re: DiscWelder Bronze. I just received the folllowing reply, which confirms divxz's reply that compressed audio files such as M4a are not supported:
Thanks for the interest. You can get over 6hrs of CD quality music on a standard DVD disk. Our software accepts .aiff or .wav files. So if you have compressed audio files, you will need to convert them back to standard audio files first.

Our software burns audio into the DVD-Audio format onto DVD R/RW disks. Player compatibility comes into play not with the software, but with the hardware-drive/ media (type and brand)/ and player.
I believe the player doesn't officially support R/RW disks, but I have had some customers in the past that said they were able to play disks made by discWelder in the car.
We cannot guarantee compatibility, that question would need to be directed to the player manufacturer.
Where they wrote "I believe the player doesn't officially support R/RW disks...", I had specifically asked about whether they knew of the discs working in the '04/'05 Acura TL.

It is a dvd-r disc (it is a dvd disc, not a cd). You need a dvd burner, and cd only burner will not work. I don't believe that the 2003 TL-s has dvd capability...if it doesn't say it on the drive, it doesn't.
