Bluetooth/HFL stopped connecting to phone

A couple of weeks ago my 2008 TL Navi and my Google Nexus 4 stopped connecting to each other. They've been paired for a couple of years up to that point and worked flawlessly.
I've tried re-pairing it, and HFL wouldn't find the phone. It would also not find another phone (iPhone4). Basically, pairing process would time out. Yes, both phones were in discovery mode during that time.

At first I thought this was caused by my recent Navi DVD upgrade from 4.92 to 4.A2. I've reflashed back to 4.92 though and it didn't help.

Navi System Link diag doesn't show any errors (HFL box is green).

At this point I think there might be something wrong with hardware - i.e. Bluetooth antenna falling off or something ? Any thoughts ?

Bump.. tested this further with a Blackberry - same result (car doesn't see phone), so, at this point I'm 100% sure the problem is NOT on the phone end.

Does anyone know if Bluetooth module is affected by Navi software ? Still not sure if this could have been caused by the Navi DVD update or if the HFL hardware just happened to die around the same time.

I have heard of the HFL/bluetooth unit going bad.

I saw a thread with a fix somewhere on this board. It's a bit of work, but pretty straightforward. Try the search function.

Hfl

I can't even get my HFL button on the steering column to respond. Is this something that just goes out over time?

That I'm not sure about, but since it's an electrical component it does have the possibility of going out.

I'm not sure if there is a fuse for it or not, but have you tried replacing that?

The HFL and Navi are two different systems, although they do use the same microphone. I haven't heard of any HFL issues caused by updating the Navi software with a new DVD.

That would be unique-- the HFL buttons have been bulletproof.
The problem has always been the HFL unit itself-- it stops responding and the MID shows the HFL status as "booting up" when the HFL goes bad.
