Balancing DVD-A
Balancing DVD-A
I'm ordering my Blue Pearl/Camel this weekend. Is there any way to balance the 5 channels other than by ear? This is actually very hard to do by ear alone. The way it is done on a home system is with pink noise often from a DVD-Video and a sound pressure level meter (it measures decibels, $30 at the Rat Shack) and you adjust each channel so the volume is the same at the listening position.
Is there a DVD-A disk such as this or are pink noise available on the demo disk? The salesman was quite clueless about this.

From the normal screens, there is no way to trim the individual channels, except for subwoofer level. There may, however, be some kind of secret diagnostic screen for this, but I'm just guessing. Nonetheless, the balance seems quite good. I haven't shot tones in the car, but there wouldn't really be any point anyway, since I can't tweak the levels.
My only complaint, and it's a very minor one, is that CD playback sounds a little warm. I may be able to tweak the bass setting a bit, but it's really close to great anyway.

One other possibility - once you get your DVD-A's try listening to the other groups on the disc. Most will contain alternate recordings of the same music, but I was messing around with one of mine (I think it was Telarc's Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture?) and there was a test track with pink noise like you're talking about. Can't remember if the demo disc had a similar feature. Sorry to be so vague.
Thanks for your input. I have the Telarc 1812 overture but it's on SACD- rats. Maybe I need a duplicate copy. I didn't expect individual channel pots although that would be best but I was hoping to approximate it with the balance and fade controls. I'll search for a source and if I find one I'll let everyone know.
I know that what I'm asking is overkill but the car attracts audio nuts like me (my home theater is nearly as much as the car), but the technology is not that fancy and they could have made it easy.

I've got a lead on a company that sells DVD-As that include pink noise on the deeper tracks. www.silverlinerecords.com. I'll get one and try it out. If it works I'll let everyone know how to do it.
