Back-up Camera install recomendation in SoCal
Back-up Camera install recomendation in SoCal
I am just about ready to get the backup camera installed on my 2006 TL and was wondering if anyone used a particular shop in Los Angeles. The local Al's & Ed's will charge me about $400. I don't have problem spending that much, however, if a shop already installed similar cameras with DOM's unit I would see them.
The latest DIY instructions from DCC doesn't look too bad. I almost have all my parts together, but if you are interested, we can set up a meet to install them together. Colossus might be interested in this as well.
I appreceiate the offer. I have to think about it. Where would we meet? Not that I cannot do it myself, I just don't feel like taking appart the car w/o previous experience. Where can I see the DCC's diy instructions?
Thanks
Thanks

There you go...hardest part of the install is just takin' the car apart...good part about doin' in yourself is the next time you need to make a change or adjustment, you'll already know your car inside and out.

Well I should be free for the next 3 weekends (I finish medical residency June 16th and will be plastered that weekend - probably in Vegas). I'm up to driving as far away as SD if people wanna meet up and do a group install. If somebody is willing to share tools like a dremel or something that would help.
I too don't mind spending $ if the job is done right, but even Al & Eds made some mistakes on my audio system on my last car - and when they charge $80/hour for labor they should know what they're doing. I get paid $60/hour moonlighting at Kaiser and if I F*** up people die Mr Bigglesworth!
If anybody in SoCal who is good with installs is willing to help out I'm sure we could compensate you for your time helping some of us.

Remember, good, fast, or cheap. You get to pick two.

Well.. if you are planning to use Dom's TVandNav2Go also for a PS2/DVD/Carputer/media player you will need an audio interface. The TVandNav2Go is for video only, no audio. Dom sells the TVandNav2GO with a FM modulator option, but if you want something better for the iPod (PIE X3, USA Spec PA11-HON2, etc), then you might as well do it all at once so you can add both iPod integration and audio support for the TVandNav2Go. This is especially true if you have to take the center console and/or remove the back passenger seats. You'll get a cleaner install doing it with one sweep (unless you can plan ahead).

As far as the IPod, I use the PIE audio input for my IPod. I don't need the screen integration, so that was sufficient.
Good luck!

Well I already got my camera from Wendy. I ordered DOM's PNP unit today so should have it by next week (wish I ordered it earlier but the PNP kept going OOS).
Are we still up for doing a SoCal meet to do the install?

I got the DOM's PnP unit and Wendy's camera. I was looking at DIY instruction and have some questions. I am only going to use it for the backup camera. The unit came with the following:
1. Video unit.
2. PnP cable.
3. 12V cable that plugs into the 12V input.
My question is this. There are bunch of other wires that are sticking out of the unit. I know the blue wire is connected to the 12V on the backup light. What about the rest of those wires? There is couple of white wires, green and black.
Also where do I connect the 12V power cable?

You will need to ground a few of them. Look over DCC's DIY again, hopefully you pick up what's missing.
A lot of members are running an "add-a-circuit" line from slot 32 of the fuse box to the trunk. This will provide switched 12V supply for the Dom.
Any of you guys have a dremel?
I am trying to decide on an audio interface before I start my install.

I know there have been a lot of discussions about it. Can you give me the simple form?
How and where does this unit connected. I understand the fuse part, but where is the other end connects to?

I haven't bought the "add-a-circuit" wire yet (I haven't been able to find it), but I'm assuming the other end is just a free wire that will connect (via solder or wire connectors/joiners) to the power wire for Dom's module.
This is from DCC's DIY:
So for the wires you need to ground, you can untwist them from their counterparts and then bunch just those wires together and attach them to the ground bolt thats behind the liner.
I've been trying to find the thread with pictures, but I can't seem to find it.
Hopefully DCC or Crook can clarify.
This is from DCC's DIY:
There are 4 wires to ground (sorry..I said three in a different post). 1 black wire for the power harness to DOM's unit, 2 white wires and 1 green wire.
-Green twisted with White wire: Ground to allow DOM's to play while car is in motion.
-Black: ground to power harness of DOM's box
-Other white wire: this one is twisted with the blue wire and must be separted. The blue wire attaches to reverse light so camera will turn on automatically. I wired mine to a switch so that I could control the camera at will.

alright down ream me for being completely cluess...
...just bought my TL so im new to the ACURA world let alone the customizing world.
anyways, can someone enlighten me as to what Dom's PNP module is? that way i'm not totally lost while reading this stuff. THANKS.

Well, after much consideration and couple of arguments with my wife I am leaning toward doing it my self. So if you guys are still up for the meet, let see what we can come up with.
My only concern is electrical part:
The power to the DOM's unit
The connection to the reverse light. (I think both the camera and the unit need to be connected).

Go to AutoZone (Kragen doesn't carry it) and look for a "add-a-circuit." It is a wire with a fuse that will connect to the driver's side fuse box. You can run this wire back to the trunk to power Dom's unit. Check out DCC's DIY thread for more details. Other than the power, 4 wires just need to be grounded.
The camera will draw power from the backup lights.
I've picked up a rotatry tool, but I'm waiting for my PIE X3 to arrive. If you want to install yours this weekend, PM me and I can help you out. You can use my rotary tool.

I checked the DCC's instruction. The blue wire form the DOM's unit connects to the reverse light, the power for camera should be connected to the same reverse light.
Connect-a-cercuit is only one wire. I assume I would need to connect the positive power wire. What about the negative wire? I am realy bad with electrical stuff. Can you draw a diagram?
Also what is the rotary tool?
Do I have to take the back seat out and any panels to run the wire to the driver's side?

From DCC's DIY thread:
I think the negative wire ("the black wire") goes to ground.
I thought the camera only needs to connect to the Dom which will provide power. So Dom's power wire connects to add-a-circuit and the Dom's blue wire taps into the reverse lights. The camera will pull power from the blue wire of Dom's.
I need to go look at all the parts again. Man, you're making me question myself.
Which is good!
You will need a rotary tool (aka Dremel) to do this so the camera will fit:

There is a power wire that can connect to any switchable power source. I used a tap and connected it to the cigarette lighter wire in the center console.

suppafreak, you are right. I checked the wires for the camera and you will need a power and ground for it as well. Tapping into the backup light will force the camera to turn on when you reverse and off normally. You can ground the other wire at the same location as the others: the ground bolt behind the liner in the trunk. At least thats what I intend to do for mine.
YES,
Blue wire from dom's to reverse lights, add-a-circuit for power wire of dom's, and grounding of dom's (1 black, 2 white and one green). The power for the camera will also tap off of the reverse lights (same source of power as the blue wire for dom's). You'll also need to ground the camera as well. Hope that helps...try to bolt your camera ground to the same location as the others in the DIY thread. You don't have to, but since the factory used that same bolt, I figure it'd be the best place for it.
