Apple today announced it has teamed up with Acura, Audi, Honda and Volkswagen to deliver iPod integration with their car stereos for 2006 model lines. Seamless integration of iPods in cars allows music lovers to enjoy high-quality sound through their car’s stereo system, easily access their entire music library and take their music with them everywhere they go. There are now 15 car companies around the world offering iPod integration, and more than 5 million cars will ship with iPod support in the US in 2006.
“We’re thrilled to team up with Acura, Audi, Honda and Volkswagen to provide drivers with a seamless iPod experience,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPod Product Marketing in the press release. “Car companies are embracing the iPod, and over 30 percent of the cars sold in the US in 2006 will offer iPod integration."
The Honda and Acura Music Link iPod integrations will be the first to include text-to-speech capabilities or VoiceID, which is used to search for playlists, artist and album names or genre information. Acura and Honda will feature iPod integration in the majority of their lineup beginning later this year.
Beginning in November, Audi will feature iPod integration in the A3, A4 and TT models and Volkswagen will offer iPod integration for the majority of their 2006 US lineup.

member "acurainternet" claims that it will be able to retrofit pre-06. and that they should be getting the pieces in sometime in "the next two weeks"
how can all this information be so wide and varied? some say yes, some say no.
auuugh... i just hope it works.

I don't think anyone has said 'no' definitively. Sure, my Acura service advisor said that. But, he had to ask someone. So, that cast immediate doubt from my perspective.
By all indications, it looks like we will be able to retrofit the MusicLink to our cars. If what AcuraInternet says is true, then we have our answer. If his claims can't be verified, I'm sure we'll know from other sources soon enough.
I'm sure most of us who want an MP3 solution for the TL are eager to know.

the dealer i went to test an 06 called, so i asked him. he said June. I said WTF and basically i will go get a new Lexus IS if it would take that long.

Hang in there for a few more weeks. The same hardware that goes in the '06 TL will fit in the '05. At $250 it's not going to be cheap but it will work. You'll be able to navigate the iPod using voice commands.

Yeah really, I've heard of ipod devotion but this is a new one, getting a completely different (and more expensive if it's IS 350) car because an adapter won't be released for a couple months, he could use the XM trial period to help pass the time

For those of you considering going to Lexus cuz you can interface an ipod to it. Don't bother. It's similar to a tape deck adapter. You just plug your ipod earphone out to the Lexus Aux in. Only difference is you don't see a cord running to your tape deck. So it is kinda lame. This Acura integration should be tons better. If it is similar to the Icelink, you could display ID3 tags on the screen, charge the battery, play/stop the ipod when the car is on/off or you switch to AM/FM/CD. Couldn't do any of that in a Lexus.

Well, iPod integration (or at least an AUX port) is an important part of my car buying criteria. I didnt bother with the Infiniti G for that reason. Plus, Honda said they will be available from December or Janurary, and the dealer told me it will be available in JUNE. Today he called me again and i asked him and he said March this time. I think he is simply lying or trying to jack up the price by offering "first in line" privileges, so i basically told him to call me when it is available. Maybe another dealer would give me a different answer, but if no one can give me an honest answer, i will simply go to Lexus.

Just called my dealer, and they said the Music Link is suppose to be able to be ordered in the system starting Friday (dec 16th), or Monday (dec 19th)
also doesn't know a install fee yet, but is guessing around $150, he said may be less depending on whats involved.
i'll be calling back to order one ASAP
from the looks of it, they might be hard to get after the first week or two they're released.

I was driving by my dealership today and decided to stop by. My friends ex-wife works there adn she usually hooks me up with service... Anyhow, she said that they are getting those iLink kits in tomorrow (16 Dec) and the total installed price is apprx. $420.
I asked if the info would show up on Navi, but they don't know yet, not until they get the unit with all manuals/info booklets.
I've put my name down as an experimental car (for their 1st install)... with an option if it DOES show up on Navi and if I get a discount by giving my car as a tester for the dealership techs. Now we'll see what happens

hhhmmm, so you can't just use a BUTTON instead of voice control? i can change cd's and tracks w/o voice control, why not folders + mp3's?

Since I hadn't seen any confirmed pricing, I thought I'd post my experience.
I take delivery of an '06 TL NAVI (Black/Parchment) tomorrow Acura of Brookfield (Milwaukee area dealer) and part of the negotiated price was the installation of the iPod interface once available. Price I am paying is $495 installed. I mainly wanted to roll it into the purchase price for financing and warranty purposes (past experience on dealer installed options prompted the second), though the story from the dealer seems to be that it would be part of the warranty regardless.
Timeframe I was told was mid to late January.
