Anyone fit a 4" in the center channel?

So I did search a little, cant really find anything. Has anyone fit a 4" one in the factory opening? I have a 3.5" polk in there right now, my reason for going to a 4" is the ability to get a higher quality speaker in there. I have scan d3004 tweeters and what to match their sound, a lot of information comes through the center with the ms8.

Once I get everything for my install, I plan on installing an esotar2 430 for the center channel. It is only listed as a 3.5" though. I plan on some small tweeter as well.

I cut the factory wires going to the center speaker and hooked up my radar detector speaker wires to it, its loud as hell and all hidden.

I haven't but I have a new center grill on order and an old 4" driver. I may experiment on the old grill when the new one arrives.

honestly, unless you are running an aftermarket 5.1 setup or are doing a high end 2 channel w/ phantom center there is no point. If you stay stock you are limited to what the factory system puts through the center and that isn't much.

FWIW, I was planning on a DNX9960 running 5.1 and if you remove the ANC module you can actually shoehorn a 5.25" in that location with some minor modification.

Diamond-Joe, can you elaborate on what minor mods you think are required. I tried to fit a 4" in and just ran out of room. I don't want to cut the dash and the speaker grille opening is only about 4". TIA.

Keep in mind...everyone has a different interpretation of "minor"

My plan was to make a fiberglass mount that sealed the 5.25" to the bottom of the dash, then using the stock grill as a template make a new grill. The grill would mainly be just a frame then covered in grill cloth, still flush in the dash. I'd say you'd get about 85% of the 5.25" coming through the grill.

5.25 - wow.. The logic 7 set up with the MS8 has much more information coming through than the stock system did, I put the polk 3.5 in with the stock system and I was happy, then I put the MS8 in and upgraded my tweeters to the scan d3004 and now Im not. However, a friend just remined me of a good option that I have actually heard and sound good, the H audio Trinity (3") can be used as a widebander from 300 up, I ve actually heard them used like this paried with 8's in the doors and they sound great. While I think its ideal to have the center play as low as your mids up front, thats not going to happen with me so I think Im gonna try these....

Gary,

I was looking at this as well and I will soon be checking to see the largest driver that can fit up there and I plan on getting a smaller tweeter and coaxially mounting the tweeter so it is floating over the mid (think the mid '90 mb quarts). However, another thought I had is if you don't use the 2 pockets below the radio, maybe a speaker grill could be fabricated to match the curvature and it seems like you would have tons of room to mount a 5.25 or 6.5 in there. You would lose your pockets and your power outlet, but could end out with a 3-way center if so wanted.....again, just a thought.

Thats a pretty cool outside the box idea, would you put the woofer in that area and put the tweeter in stock center location or keep them together? Another issue with using a larger center is having to give it more juice than the MS8 can provide. I was looking at one of the arc/elf minis or an old school zapco studio amp from ebay. Even if I could fit a 4" in the stock location, Id still consider getting a good 4" mid and then finding some decent passive and adding a tweeter, perhaps another scan if it would fit, but I doubt it.
