Anyone ever remove the stock sub?
Anyone ever remove the stock sub?
I have 2 JL audio W6s. When I was first testing them out, I had the box kind of sideways and the bass was great. With the final installation, the box fits tight up against the seats and sort of seals off the trunk. Like this, I feel the car shaking but not as much sound gets to the front. I was thinking about removing the stock sub altogether to let some bass through. Only thing I'm worried about is excess road noise from the trunk when the stereo is off. Anyone have experience with this?
You have to let the bass into the cabin! The trunk is effectively isolated from the cabin. Firing though the rear seats takes a lot out of the impact of the subwoofer. Either open the arm rest in the rear seat or take out the factory subwoofer, or both.
You might also make sure that the subwoofers, if forward firing through the rear seat, are not right up against the seat back. They need to be back an inch or three.
The original subwoofer is a "Free-Air" configured arrangement. This means the trunk is acting like the box. Putting a subwoofer in the trunk without allowing for the bass to enter the cabin is very limiting. You may think the boom-boom is bass but most of the bass energy and details are being muffled. Why spend all that money and not enjoy it properly?

Remove the rear seat
Remove the side pieces off the rear deck
Remove the rear deck
Unscrew the subwoofer and pull it out from the top.
Sounds simple but it's alot of work
The seat is in two pieces, bottom and back. Careful when taking the back portion of the seat out of the car. There are some sharp mounting plates on the bottom that could cut the doors or plastic pieces.
Do a search for more details. I would post the diagram but I think it misplaced it.

Yup I removed my OEM Stock sub for my 2 12 Type R DVC subs. Works ok but still not enough open air for the base to get into the cabin. The best would be if our seats were able to fold down. And dynomat the trunk is a must.

What's the reason for Dynamat? Is it just for vibration or does it make it sound different?
Thanks for the help.

I feel the same way. Til today, flipping down the ski pass thru does not make much of a difference. You will also notice not much of a difference taking out the OEM sub. But maybe I cannot notice it much because I am running over 1100watts into my subs. But yeah you would be best to leave your box at least 4inchs away from the seats for better base response.
You should dynomat the trunk. Otherwise, your trunk will rattle like a tin can. It will sound horrible outside your car.
Say you have any pics of your custom install to share with us all!
