He's using Road Runner with, I believe, the DigitalFX 2.0 skin. Same one I decided on, it goes well with the TL interior.

Yes, I'm using Roadrunner as my frontend. I started with the regular DigitalFX 2.0 skin. I switched to the transparent DigitalFX skin which lets me place an image behind in the background.

I ended up placing the GPS receiver under the front dash. The reardeck location block the signal due to the tinted glass.

Hey King,

Got a question for you, I know the 7inch screen fits into the stock bracket.

Did your 8" wide sceen do the same? I just purchased an 8" and forgot to check if the oem housing will even work.

You will still have to do some cutting. I have the Dynamix 8" widescreen. I had to do alot of cutting to make it fit, not just the hole but on the backside there is plenty of plastic that needs to be removed. Here's a picture of the backside. I purchased an extra LCD screen off ebay to work on and just switched them when I did the install

Hey king, how much will a typical computer cost me for the carpc. I am interested if you could help.

King was one of my inspiration sor I guess I can answer that from my experience. What I suggest you is do some reasearsh first, put on paper what are your objectives and goal with this project. Then you could see what parts would best fit your need.

Speaking of HOW MUCH, it also depends on what YOU want!!! do you want power, speed, play games.....again you need to make some choice.

In general it shouldnt cost you more then 1500$ for the PC-Screen + some accessories.

I still need to buy some antenna and USB stick but thats around 250$ together.

MY PC with mobo/Ram/case/HDD/PowerSupply was about 400$ or maybe a bit more I'll have to check at my numbers
and the Screen was 375.00 just ordered mine yesterday from ebay.

so that makes it around 800$ for the PC+Screen so around 1000$ you should get a pretty good setup... PM me if you still have some questions.

Pakiboy,

VmtSquad is correct. I saved some money becuase I had some spare PC parts laying around. But the more you want it to do the more it will cost.

I am using the Dynamix 8 inch widescreen. I had to cut alot to get it in the housing but it's pretty impressive. I notice on the freeway that cars like to pull alongside of me just to look inside to check out the screen in action.

Thanks VMTsquad and king. Well i am just looking for a basic setup to start with and then add things on later. In the beginning i am just looking for a navi system. The reason carpc attracts me is because of the fact that i can put all my songs on that hard drive or even a external hard drive and just plug in when i am on the road. I will start looking on ebay tonight. If you guys dont mind could you give me a list of exaclty all the parts that i will need to order and i mean from wires to boards to screens and everything. And i want to do this project in such a way that i keep my original and if needed before selling i can put all the oems back like they were. All ideas are greatly appreciated and i am looking forward to hear some advices and how to do stuff..

Thanks again

Thanks, and I will be happy to help you as much as I can, but like I said you look like you don't really know yet what your gonna do!

I suggest that you visit this website before coming on acurazine.
MP3car.com

This is THE website for the "CarPc". Search on both forum and you'll find some amazing setup...ITL, theklassic, King of Pain are the guys who inspired me here.

Good luck! and be free to ask questions on the road...

Hey King,

Did you heat and mold the top and bottom of the faceplate to take some of the bend out of it?

I'm just about done getting it all cut out and bent. I have a couple of minor dings so it's not going to look as pristine as yours, but my wife looked at it and said "What's wrong with it".

Stupid me first tried over the stove and then realized that I had a heat gun.

Getting straight cuts with a dremel tool is a challenge too. Lots of filing and fitting.

I left the natural curve of the faceplate. I filled in the gap between the screen and the faceplate with plastic filler and then filed everything down to keep it straight. I only used the dremel to gut the back side of the faceplate. Fitting the screen to the faceplate was the most item consuming process of all. Lots and Lots of filing and checking the fit.

Nicely done, how do you like the sound quality? I had a carpc in my old jeep for a while, and didn't wire through the head unit's aux-in. Sound quality without the preamp was just a bit sub-par.

I installed a E-MU 0404 sound card. Very high quality card with high output. The included software has a parametric EQ and level setting to get the sound just right. On good quality MP3s this card really shines.

Here's a link to more info on this card.

Hey King,

i was just searching carpc and came across this thread...nice work I am considering a carpc for ease of tuning system using zapco dsp software. 1k would be a lot though to add just that feature, don't know if I would use it for much else. Any suggestions? I already have nav, back-up camera, and dvd converter

Thanks

Why not a PDA in the cup holder bay, or thereabouts? If you wanted to leave the car pristine, could you do one in the change tray?

I think the icons/controls would be too small on a pda. Some guys are talking about a tablet...but, I don't see enough advantage of that over my mac to justify the additional cost.

The carpc can give you some serious tuning capabilties. There are some folks at mp3car.com using the PC and tuning software to get excellent results.

What are you currently using to tune your audio?

My car was a non-navi. It's a little different to install one on a navi-TL but I think you can still maintain all you voice commands. Do a search. You'll find some CarPCs on navis too.

You can install a car PC, but with 2 options:
1. Relocate factory navi screen to lower two compartments and place car PC screen in orignal location. You get to keep the factory navi and a car pc.
2. Do a met152/csmeance carputer where you take the touchscreen signal from the navi screen and give it to a computer to process and use. With this method, the screen is lightly modified, you can see the PC on the stock screen, but with low quality) and everything will look stock.

I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if anyone had actually managed to relocate the Navi screen to the lower compartments as csmeance mentions... it seems there isn't enough room...

For sure there's no PERFECT FIT possible here. If you're going for a project like that, you can't be scared to cut and make some fitting...its part of the project.

It Depends if you're picky or not.....I spent more then 10 hours just on my Screen bezel and its not even at my taste...but people don't even realize, they think the car came that way...I guess I did a great job !! Its all about the details!

I see that you're in Montreal, let me know if you wanna take a look at my setup, maybe I could help !!

Good luck!

Vmt,

Are you saying that you relocated your stock navi screen to those two lower compartments?

I don't think he reloaceted the screen, but the screen can be put there if you are willing enough to hack up and make your own custom flippy compartment area.

No I didn't since I don't have the NAVI version. I relocated the HVAC stock display...and it wasn't that hard.

What I was saying is, if you want some help to figure that out, send me a PM and we'll take a closer look at this together....

Vmt

**Thanks csmeance for the clarification

I am a former BMW mastertech and now I'm a network engineer for an IT company and I am very impressed with the integration and execution - Biggest test - Does it look like it came from the factory = YES! Very impressive! Oh so many ideas running through my head right now.

Wow!!!

Glad to see my old thread being raised from the dead. I've done some upgrades since then and it's still going strong, no major issues. I just may take the PC out this weekend to upgrade some software and run security patches.

A couple of things with the stock navi screen. First, you're right the resolution is pretty bad. Second, the connections for the screen are not standard. The screen is soldered directly to the circuit board that sits behind the screen. You would have to hack into it. I think someone on the site did that.

The silver plate? R U alking about the silver trim piece around the shifter? That piece should just pop out with a gentle pull. Use a flathead screwdriver and gently pop it out.

I wanted to leave you a note saying when you are done with the car, I want to buy it = ) but I had to run. Since your on this site, can I ask you what tint shop you went to? Thx

ezland00:

To relocate the wires you have to extend the wires on the LCD connectors about 1.5 feet. This will enable you to move the LCD panel to below the radio. Trim and sand down the corners. You will need to fab a front LCD cover too. I think some people screwed it down to the air vents. I decided not to to mount it down below. I just hid it in the dash under the center speaker. Since I have an aftermarket stereo the lower part of the LCD is useless to me. I usually have the AC/heat vents in the same position too.

V6AccordCPE:

LOL, That was me at the Best Buy. I was shopping around for a flat panel TV for the bedroom. Thanks for the compliment. Since IMO the new TL looks horrible I intend to keep my TL for a while. I had the windows done by Best Window tinting in Tustin, Jamboree and the 5 freeway.
