Amp Recommendation

Hello everyone,

I just purchased an MTX 5500 12" subwoofer (350 RMS @ 4 ohms) and was looking for a good amp to match to it. I am kind of on a budget and I was looking at the Alpine MRP-M500 (500 RMS @ 2 ohms, 300 RMS @ 4 ohms). Does anyone have any experience with this amp? There are several on eBay for $130, so the price is right.

Thanks for the advice

i'd say a mono-amp...for my JL 10W3, im using a JL Audio 250/1 V2. It may be a bit pricier than the alpine but i like the fact that its a class-D amp.

The Alpine is a mono amp and Class D, as well. I really prefer JL, but I'm not sure if I can justify the price difference.

I have the MRP-F500. My sub isn't perfectly matched to it, but there is plenty of power for the moderate listener. I tested it with a 12" 500W 2 ohm setup, and it rocked the bolts off of my car. I plan on upgrading to the 12" 500W 2 ohm subwoofer very soon. I think it will be good for your sub at 4 ohms, but it really is designed to be ran at 2 ohms. For the RMS power, you really can't beat the price with Alpine when you are on a budget.

I have 2 12" P3S shallows and they're powered by a 1200W Sony Xplod AMP. It given me nothing but great looks, sound and reliability. It's about $250 but it's well worth it. To answer your question though, Alpine's have a great reputation. That'd be a safe bet too.
