All 06 TL has Naviagtion issues - Must read

OK guys, I bought my 06 TL almost 2 years ago. A month or so back, I started to experience issues with the Navi. Took it to the dealer and they said the ROM drive in the truck is bad, so they replaced it. A few days later the issue came back. I called them and now they tell me that ALL 06 TLs has this issue and that they can't do anything until Acura release a new hard rive design. He also said that it will probably end up being a recall from Acura for this problem. Can anyone with an 06 TLs also have this issue?

No one is going to be able to help you unless you describe the problem in a tad bit more detail. I had an issue with navi and they had to replace the drive in the back as well as my Head Unit. What was happenig was the radio would go hay wire, wouldnt turn on or if it did I couldnt use any of the buttons on the HU and the navi screen would just be stuck on the disclaimer page.

But the replacement fixed my issue so far.

Come on guys, give me a break.

Anyway, seriously, the issue with my Navi is that the display would show a lot of vertical lines of different colors. After they replaced the drive in the "TRUNK", the display worked for a few days. Then it would come on and off intermittently. It is pretty cold here in Chicago. Does the weather have any effect?

I also have an '06 with Navi and have experienced no issues like this. I'd be curious to hear the outcome going forward. If there is a "recall" on the horizon, it'd be nice to know a little bit ahead of time. Did the service advisor provide a time-line on when he/she thought such a notice might go out to owners?

I have an 07 TL-S and my first experience in cold weather this weekend I noticed the navi was going haywire, when routing a trip the damn thing was on like a 2-3 min delay and then would just freeze. The car was kept inside a parking garage all night, although it was cold for the navigaton to act like this I was pretty pissed off. I was stuck trying to navigate downtown philly for a good 30 minutes... The navigation went back to normal after about an hour... I'm sure it had to do with the cold but to me this is not acceptable and if it happens again she will be in the dealer asap!

What I think, is you been given a "line". the dealer does not know what the problem is and does not want to return good parts back to Acura who will not pay for them. Now if YOU want to pay to have it fix, they will replace parts until they find the problem. That s how is works. Take your car to another dealer. I have run across this many times with dealers. For the most part they know nothing about electronics, so the mechanic is just a part replacer

Hmmm. I wonder... I have an 06TL and live in Los Angeles. When it's particularly cold (in the 30s), I notice that the navi screen takes a few seconds to get up to full brightness after pushing OK. While it's warming up, the refresh on the screen seems somewhat slow and you can see very, very faint "lines" on the screen.

Could this be what he means? I figured it was just part of the LCD screen being cold.

Yea - the only "issue" I've ever had is that it takes anywhere from 5-25 minutes for the LCD to warm itself up enough that I can see it in night mode.

Other than that - I think there's probably a wiring issue. Either something is broke, or the wires are getting some feedback from somewhere and you're seeing it on the screen.

Either way - not normal to have lines on your display.

Have you noticed at all if the lines change? What I mean is are they there in the same spot all of the time, or do they almost look like vertical lines that move (like an old crappy TV). You may even want to sit in the driveway and try some things to see if anything affects the lines - like lights on/off, car started or not, rev up the motor etc.

Good luck, and let us know how your truck pans out

That's interesting... Never had that happen in our TL, but I have had that happen with my LCD monitor at work. It was caused by a bad monitor. I actually went through two of them that had the same problem. Switched brands, and never had the problem come back.

Does your Navi always display these lines? (Like on the disclaimer screen, audio screen, setup screen, etc?)

I'm guessing it's only on some screens? Cause if it was on all screens, then it sounds like the LCD controller. If it's only on some screens, it sounds like you have corrupt memory in the Navi computer's display driver. Unless each screen is a different "mode", in which case it could still be hardware in the display itself.

However, what seems odd, is that the lines are verticle. Usually corrupt memory, such as what sounds like would be caused by a bad drive, should not cause verticle lines. It should cause random colored pixles on the screen. The more corrupt the data, the more random pixles on the screen (Can you tell I used to write display drivers in a previous life?)

The LCD display is digital, so it should be harder to corrupt it's display than an analogue one, because it's doesn't require scan lines or anythign, which a corrupt timing signal can cause something like that.

But I have no idea how the TL's navi is setup, I'm just thinking outloud....

I agree.

I don't know why they just can't man up and say, "We see the problem, but don't know the cause. We've contacted Acura Corp/Development/Engineering to see if they have a suggested solution. We'll give you a call in a few days to let you know what's going on."

I could respect that.

Is the 06 navi/hard drive different than those in prior or succeeding years? I find it strange if the alleged problem only affects the 06s.

I have an 06, and the navi does react a bit slower in cold weather (eg LCD screen takes a while to achieve normal brightness). Once the cabin reaches a warmer temp (over 60), everything works fine. Perhaps an easy fix is to have a battery powered warmer to keep the nav and related instrument warmed during the winter, such as by plugging the warmer it into an AC outlet in the garage.

The 3G TL uses a DVD based navigation system.. not hard drive based

It's possible there's a bad batch of ROMs out there, my 04 works fine.. I wish it was faster like the 07s but it works..

The "slow-to-reach-full-brightness" LCD screen issue has been reported in all years of 3G TL's. My 04 included.

I think the OP has a different problem and I would be starting a case with ACS instantly. Tell them the dealer attempted repair yet failed and now states they don't know whats wrong. If ACS tells you it's a "known issue" at least you will have confirmation and documentation etc..

Good luck

My 06 Navi has no issues either. Even after the hack!

I think it's just you dude! Take it to another dealer and call Acura if the dealers won't play ball!

Thanks for all the feedback so far. I will try to take a picture of it and then post it for you guys. I called the dealer back and argued with a few guys. They finally agreed to swap out the screen for me. I will let you guys know what happen after the swap. It will probably be a week or two.

it must be an isolated incident then. could be a faulty unit you have. that doesnt mean "All 06 TL has Navigation issues" though.

good luck

Navi Repaired on mine

I had the same problem but it was intermittent. My wife carried a camera in the car and when it acted up she taped it. I took the video to the dealer and showed it to the tech and they ordered a new screen. It was under warranty (06 w/35000) They kept the car a few days and gave me an MDX to use while mine was being fixed. Got it back and everything is okay. My daughter has an 04 and never a problem. Go figure. By the way the tech told me it would have been about $800 for the part...............Good Luck

MC - I have an 06 TL also and have recently started with exact same issues. It started as the screen being very dim but still functioning. If I hit the MAX button to increase the illumination it was better. Then a couple of times a day I get the vertical lines and a grey screen. I've experimented with the screen while it's on the fritz and the onscreen buttons still work it seems. I've also found that tapping the screen gently or pressing the audio button again will reactivate it - but not always. So far I haven't been stuck on that screen.

Have you had any resolution for your issues? Would love to know how I should handle it. With it responding to a gentle tap, could it be loose wiring?
