07 TL Navi - not impressed
anyone else have problems w/the Navi system not being able to find 1/2 the stuff you try to find? i've put in "names" of a business and it cant find it, or it'll find it, but it's in a different city (hundreds of miles away). i understand the whole "if it's a new business or location it may not be in the navi database" but, it's gotten to the point now, where I just print out directions to some place off google maps, cuz the navi can't find it.

Hmmm. Don't think this has been noticed before.

I never expected my Navi to replace the yellow pages. I've never had a problem inputting the address of a destination. If you're using it like the yellow pages to look up by "name of business" you're probably going to have problems. I find some stuff, but I don't expect it to contain every business name in the country.
im not expecting it to have every business name, but to use an example, i was looking for directons to a popular movie theater in the area, and it found nothing. well... it found theaters but they were in cities, in other states. i dunno...im fairly technical so i dont know that i'm doing the searches "wrong" or whatever.

There are several threads suggesting different ways to better your search results and some of them do work better than others. The real problem is that the database is incomplete and appears to have been created by disconnected individuals, in a disorganized fashion, and without common goals and/ or rules. I love the NAVIGATION capabilities but I think that the database sucks.
There are many members here who are tired of hearing others complain about the nav systems stating that we are just whining and should learn to live with it. I propose that for $2000 the nav system should perform as advertised. Whenever you are sitting in front a 10 year old major business (look up the Walgreen's in your home town) the nav system should be able to find that business. If not, it is not performing as advertised and we have a right to be pissed about it.
My major pain is that I travel out of town. This is the primary reason nav systems were created in the first place and that's what I use it for. It's a real annoyance when your 4 hours from home, 2 hours from your destination, it's 8 pm and your hungry for a steak. By the time you sort through all of the restaurants in the seven surrounding states you'll likely have passed the exit you should have gotten off at.
The value in the search capabilities of the system for me is the the ability to find businesses in cities that I DON'T know. Finding anything without some idea of the address or phone number is so unreliable that it is unusable. The reason that I paid $2000 for this system is to help me find this information. The system fails to deliver.
As a major player in the navigation system market I think that Alpine has let their customers down by including this POS database... and then to have the nerve to ask you to buy it again the next year! I, for one, will not be buying an Alpine navigation system again unless something changes dramatically.
Thanks for letting me bitch.

07 TL-S Navi-Acura Canada Response
On May 2 and May 30/07 I received my 1st and 2nd response from Acura Canada to my suggestion there were significant implementation problems in my 2007 TL-S GPS navigation unit. I raised issues such as the unit's accuracy - positional errors of 300 meters being common, search function results from 100's or 1000's of Km away, POI's being 3 and sometimes 6 or 7 years out of date, etc. Since I am new here I don't want to write a long detailed report on what was asked and their response - Acura's response is 3 typed pages - and get flamed for doing it wrong. If anyone is interested, tell me the correct way to post their reply and when I get back from holidays I'll post the information - after Aug 5th. The local dealer's service department also tried to assist but had no more success with Acura Canada than I did.

The OEM navi is good for guiding you to places where you have the address. However, it kinda sucks if you want to use it as a yellow page looking for specific stores, restaurants, or whatever else you are searching for near you. In a word, I echo many posters have said here and in other threads -- i.e. the database is a POS.
I love it when I'm almost out of gas and it takes me to an old abandoned gas station. Sweet.
I will say that my system is not nearly as incomplete as the one in my wife's 03 Accord... that car still has the original disc, and you might as well not even try finding businesses, or routing on any road that isn't major. I was thrilled when I found out the '05 disc would allow something as simple as routing on "unverified roads."

I agree that the system is somewhat lacking in some areas. Keep in mind that our system is supposed to be at least one of the better builtin navis on the market.
Realize that the product life cycle for small electronic devices is very short (90-180 days tops) and competitive. Cars on the other hand have a typical model life of about 5 years. For ~$500 you can get a portable system that is more accurate and easier to use but less convenient.
The automakers seem to be s-l-o-w to upgrade components that work but are not state of the art. Why can't our 04-06 TLs read cd/dvd id tags? Because the car was finalized as far as components probably in late 2002. They had bigger fish to fry after production started so the waited 3+ years to upgrade to what to them is a minor component that already worked. There are other examples.
Sucks but I think thats the deal. What pisses me off to no end is that sometimes Civics and Accords get better stuff than TLs, that just ain't right.
