ZKW lens installed

Recently acquired a set of real zkw lens for my car. I already had the zkw-r but being the lighting guy that I am, I decided I needed the best. After I popped in the lens I realized it would need a very thick spacer to have a good cutoff, and with a thick spacer the lens retainer would never fit back on, so I resorted to shield bending. One note: the zkw lens is slightly thinner than the zkw-r so it made clipping back the retainer easier. After spending couple hours on the cutoff, I realized it's not a noticeably amount better than the zkw-r....only marginally. It's about the same at distances under 100 feet, but afterwards it will stay sharper instead of blurring like the zkw-r, I had hoped for a bigger difference but o well. Took some pics:

and I took a pic of the zkw-r lenses I got from TRS before, they have the notches which I found off, as that prohibited the lens retainer from clipping in when the notch was near the bottom orientation.

Had a couple extra TL-S headlights in my garage courtesy of a fellow forum member so I decided to take this pic:

And lastly, very sad, but I dropped one of the zkw lenses during installation, made a slight chip near the center, but doesn't affect output as far as I can see:

Here is a pic of my cutoff when I had the zkw-r:

I will get pics of my zkw cutoff once I find a good wall to use!

Nice writeup. So I'm not mad that the seller decided to ignore me for whatever reasons haha. I decided to leave my headlights factory sealed anyway, but it is nice to know that the replicas do basically as good of a job for so much less and fit correctly.

Thanks

to the average person, the differences are negligible, but only to a trained eye, will the cutoff line look more impressive. and I realized the passenger side was a bit lower after looking at the pics so I raised it up a bit afterwards. but honestly the camera doesnt capture it perfectly, as its very hard to capture different color of light accurately with a cameraphone

From my knowledge, order of brightness would be:
1. OSRAM SVS
2. OSRAM CBI
3. Philips 85122+

I have the Philips, but hope to upgrade to the Osram CBI if a good deal pops up. They are quite pricey at almost 200 a pair

Should've jumped on the group buy at hidplanet from 2 weeks ago, 25% off everything on any order.

Well, I'm building an arsenal of testing to find the brightest AND whitest bulb possible.
Thank you both for responding, first off.

Well, one of my ddm tuning bulbs finally turned purple about 3 months ago (ironically, it was the purpling over time that made them match all my fogs/leds up front!)...so the quest began.

I ordered Osram 66240 regular bulbs first, not knowing there's a difference and honestly, they were too yellow but I was absolutely floored by how bright and far they lit up. I then got the CBI and although I was happy with the output, I decided to go MORE bluish/white and try and get back to the all white front end (reason being, the teal ring in my lights clashed with the amber look). Big mistake...I sold my pair of CBI's to Jeff sauceja for $155 shipped and thoroughly regret it. They were very white and very bright, although not as bright as the normal CBI, obviously.

Well, fast forward to now, I recently bought a backup set of ZKW-R lenses and type s diffusers to install on my cleared backup lights. They have much better lenses and figured I'd rather buy another set than sacrifice one of my two entire lenses. So, now that the teal will be out of the headlights, I'm contemplating bringing back the amber and am thinking about going for more of a 5K and BRIGHTER headlight.

Right now, my DDM replacements are good, 6K and decently bright. I had gotten morimoto's but their 6k looked greenish AND they sent me a bad bulb. I most recently got had (should have known for $60) on ebay for some "legit" Phillips Ultinon 6000K 85122WX. The box came with the rainbow effect all over, no security sticker and the globes had yellow salt, not red. FAKE! I even wrote a message in my payment stating don't bother sending if they were not real and that I'd be checking with a UV light.

Anyway...I'll add SVS to my research, thank you!

Unless Jeff changes his mind and sells them back to me...funny enough, turns out the CBI were the best already.

Hopefully by this weekend I will have the CBIs installed behind authentic ZKWs. I'll be sure to update this thread with some DSLR cutoff pics as soon as I have them.

CBI are the best and brightest at 5000.
SVS are the best and brightest at 4300.

Both beat the 85122+ by what, a few hundred lumens?

I personally prefer the 4300 on the road. But would rather see the 5000 on the car...

^^^That's my issue. I like how the 6K look looking AT the car, but down the road, the 4300 is more pleasing to the eye. Plus, 5K with amber, 6k with white.

Hmmm...

Naw, man...I'm happy with how the car drives. I don't want to start messing with the engine...1) it'll never end once I start 2) it'll never be "fast enough".
Plus, these days my goal is better mpg. Went from 19.5 to 24+ mpg just changing to a lower shift point. Makes me happy!

Kurt...those are supposed to be NICE...but for the price they cost, I was able to get both!

J - they are a little pricey, but I figure they don't come around often. Plus I worked out a deal with JnC for the lenses and custom headlights that I was happy with, so I figured it was as good a time as any to make the plunge!
