Windshield sunshade recommendation, worried about dashboard cracking
Hey guys, I am worried about my dashboard cracking. I have put Aerospace 303 on it about twice a year but I dont think that is enough protection.
I bought a sunshade from Strauss auto near where I live for $8 and it is complete garbage. Suction cups dont work and left a nasty residue on my windshield. I even cleaned the suction cups up and they still dont work. Anybody have a nice one that they can recommend to me? I am looking at this one currently. http://www.amazon.com/Sunshade-Acura...7467339&sr=8-2 |
how about the cover craft sunshade products?
http://www.autogeek.net/heatshields.html a little pricier but beats replacing the dash. i would 303 the dash more often if you can on top of getting the sunshade for the windshield. |
Since I replaced my TL dash (under warranty), I always use a sunshade similar to the one you linked, I tinted the windows all around and recently installed the windows visors thinking in cracked the windows every time the car sits under the sun. All of this, hoping the dash won't crack again. Most of the ppl around recommends the 303 for the dash cleanup. I think that's the best that we can do.

Does the sunshade you guys are currently use attach to the windshield via suction cups? Or they use the window visors to hold them in place like the one I found on amazon.
Thanks |

what about tinting your windshield?

so...? 35% tint(which OP has) is also illegal in NYC.
could get away with something like 70% on the windshield |
+1 for the cover craft. It is a well crafted piece that is custom fitted to the windshield of TL. I use it almost every day. It works well in the Florida sun
|
^^ +1.
How about Huper Optik 70% on the windshield - not noticeable. I'm considering this - sun glare is a pain plus keeps interior cool. I already have 35%-sides and 20% on the rear. |
I bought my heatshield from the dealer for $32 one day when i was there. Best shade I have used and is holding up great. It does use the sun visors, but works very well and was cheap. I use it even on cloudy days to keep the dash as nice as possable.

Modern auto glass shields out UV rays, so as long as you're not using any solvent-based dressing on it you should be fine
|
Thank you all for your replies. I will be buying a sunshade within a few days. Just returned the one I had got from Strauss and exchanged it for some chevron techron gas system cleaner. Currently on a pimp my ride shopping spree and the sunshade will be my next item.
Check out these bad boys I have yet to install. http://img40.picoodle.com/i567/yvuru/m1tx_eb0_u7gn9.jpg |
I would also re-moisturize your dash periodically (before using 303). I like poorboy's natural look interior dressing
http://www.amazon.com/Poorboys-World.../dp/B004FJTQAM Think of this as skin moisturizer, and 303 as suntan lotion. |
Do you not have a garage? If I'm home my car is always in the garage, while at work I just use one of those foldable ones that get held on by the visors. Works fine for the times I'm not at home.

Reflective windshield shade - custom fitted to the TL. Win. Win. |

Reflective windshield shade - custom fitted to the TL. Win. Win. Also tinting my windshield is ABSOLUTELY not an option. The cops where I live HATE tinted windows, I feel like they are on a mission to give out as many tinted window tickets possible. If they notice the tinted windshield I would be fucked. My car is parked outside and not in a garage. I do have a garage but it would be a hassle to use as it is currently used for storage and there are bugs everywhere. I do my best to keep my car clean and waxed since it is parked outside. TYPE SHINY STATUS  |
honestly, just go to target, autozone, etc. Grab any good looking folding sunshield and use that. I think I spent a max of $20 and it's lasted about 8 years and still going strong. I just use my visors to keep it in place.

I did not know modern auto glass shields out UV rays. But it may not be enough as people have reported cracked dashboards already and the insane hassle they had to do to handle it. Not looking forward to that. I think I will be buying the sunshade handa-accessories.com in a few days. Hopefully it wont be sold out by the time I get to it... otherwise I will have to get the other ones.

Custom fit sunshade:
http://www.heatshieldstore.com/ They used to be CanvasWorks.com. There was a huge group buy back in 2004. I got one then and still have it 7 years later. Excellent quality!! I also got the sunshade for the rear window, but I hardly use it since I have HO 20% tint on the rear window. |
I've always used the auto expressions sun shade from wal mart.
http://www.car-accessories.cn/produc...sunshade/1.jpg They always fit perfect for my previous car and now the tl. I don't even need to use the visor or sunction cup to keep it up. It extends far enough to stay up itself. |
I purchased a shade from the Acura dealership accessories dept, each model in the Acura lineup had its own shade specifically made, this fits perfect!!!! No suction cups needed it stay in place perfectly & made w/ strong material. also 40% of heat delfects , my car stays cool on warm days (black interior).

I think the shiney reflective type work the best, then park toward the sun if possible.

Stupid question but is the dash listed under a recall since it is such a widespread problem?
|
I use Heatshield, which is also custom fit to the car; actually I got it at my Acura dealer's accessories shop. When new, it is firm and holds it's shape but of course after a lot of use it kind of sags in the middle, but still does it's job very well keeping the sun out.
I'm guessing all sunshades sag after a while though  http://www.heatshieldstore.com/catal...products_id=19 |

+Heatshield. The are custom fit for the car it goes in. It rolls up for easy storage. Quality reflective surface with a firm backing. The one I bought for the TL in 06 is not as thick/firm as the new one I bought for the BMW last year (an improvement?).
Been using them for +15 years on all my cars. Bought the heatshield for the Accord 93 at the Honda dealer. The heatshield for 06 TL at the Acura dealer (though some do not carry it). Had to order the heatshield for the 99 BMW (crappy BMW sunscreen died) directly from heatshield at the link in nfnsquared's post. As for sagging. 06 TL is only barely sagging-and I use it every day. The BMW has not sagged at all (it is noticeably sturdier than the one for the TL). 93 Accord sagged immediately-but I used it until I sold the car-and it went with the car. For the TL I also use 303 Aerospace spray on the dash as recommended by many members. |

I dunno exactly after how long it mine started sagging, I do use it A LOT in the summertime here in TX, about 1-2 summers worth :dunno:
|
How bad is the sagging problem? How much effectiveness of the sunshade is lost due to this sagging?
|
The covercraft one will not sag at all.
|
Sagging really isn't that bad with the Heatshield. It still covers the whole windshield and works just as good as if it had no sagging.

i went ahead and ordered the same heat shield the original poster linked from amazon. total was just under $40 compared to buying directly from heatshieldstore ($35 + $12 for shipping)
the one on the amazon link has the same interior and exterior picture as the one on heatshieldstore so i'm assuming they are both the same brand, but one is ~$10 cheaper shipped than the other. would like to see how the sun shade holds up and reflects heat when it starts to "sag" had to buy these seeing how the weather here in tx is 97F+ EVERY DAM DAY |

I have still yet to buy mine. I would appreciate it  |
I just went to walmart to get mine.... no need to be fancy... As long as it blocks out the sun.. its good to go! and having window tinted helps too!
