windshield replacement

does anybody know who currently manufactures OEM replacement glass for '08 TLs? Searched a few of the older threads and saw "PPG" popping up a few times. Just wondering if that was still the case?

The quality of the generic windshield as compared with an "Acura" stamped windshield should be exactly identical sans the logo, correct?

My insurance will cover up to $375 but I heard Acura charges a big premium if you want OEM. I'd like to save money, but at the same time, don't want to sacrifice any quality.

Plenty of threads on windshields already. Not sure what search term you used, but using "aftermarket windshield" in the search box yielded this thread as the first result:

Pilkington, APTech, or PPG?

Second result is this thread:

OEM vs aftermarket windshield

FWIW, the local Safelite guy told me that Safelite now has their own acoustic aftermarket version.

Bottom line, the aftermarket acoustic versions seem to be fine....

back in '05 almost having my car for 6 months I got a chip. When getting it repaired ( was told that the car was too new to replace the windshield as it had not settled so fixing a chip was an option) and they did fix it.
The chip was on the shaded area so it wasn't noticle. Last year the resin came off and the insurance Co. sugested I get it replaced.
The glass Co. told me that OEM is only avaliable for the same year model ...that wasn't what I was told when the chip happened back in '05.....so now I have this PPG brand that distorts at the edges but with N.E weather I'm sure I will be replacing it soon, so my point is good luck with getting an OEM thru the Insurance...

I wound up being approved for OEM glass by my insurance company (USAA). I was OK with going with PPG (which was the acoustic glass that Safelite, USAA's subcontractor for glass, used at the time). However, I figured what the heck, I'll request OEM glass and see what happens.

I put my request in and then the fun and games began. With USAA, once you make your claim for glass, everything is handled by Safelite. For starters, the entire Safelite system from the local shop all the way up to customer service was clueless on the proper procedure for handling OEM glass requests. In addition, the local Safelite shop owner strongly lobbied me to use aftermarket glass. I suspect this was because his profit is greatly reduced when filling an OEM glass order. In addition, it just so happens that Safelite now uses it's own aftermarket brand of acoustic glass and no longer uses PPG (as told to me by the shop owner).

I held my ground with my OEM glass request and it was approved. They had to order it from the nearest Acura dealer (Minneapolis) and it was delivered in 2 days. It has the Acura logo on it instead of the Honda logo. (Made by AP Tech).

So, if you want OEM glass, my advice is to first make an OEM glass request with your insurance company and be ready for a possible run around if your insurance company uses Safelite. If they won't approve OEM glass and you still really want it, you'll just have to pay the difference in price. OEM glass is $560.93:
