windshield almost trashed

I was driving behind a SUV about 35mph. a piece of whatever hit my windshield. It’s about the size of a quarter. Lucky, the glass didn't crack, but left a dent and powderized it. Does insurance cover glass damage?

I don't know about California, but in Florida the law requires your insurance carrier to repair or replace a broken windshield at no cost to you.

Insurance will cover it but deductible applies. It is a 'no fault' claim that shouldn't affect your rate.

I have seen this in other states - not in CA. Maybe there is a company out there offering it, but odds are you end up paying higher rates overall to get it.

some insurance companies have a specific windshield policy - I had one when I went to school in Syracuse (saved me when a windshield cracked due to cold in the middle of winter).

Check with your ins. company. Mine doesn't offer windshield insurance it is just considered a no fault claim as Aegir pointed out. I paid a deductable, lower than the standard deductable, and had my windsheild repalced when mine cracked.

I am here in CO, and I know that my friend who has State Farm has windshield insurance. I belive he pays only a couple bucks more a month, but it only costs him $100 for winshield and install. He also has some sort of no-fault deductable that if anything happens to his car (keying, major paint damage, etc) he only has to pay the first $100 up to $1000 in damage. Best thing to do is contact your insurance company, some also have free dent and chip repair. When the windshield will be replaced, also talk to the glass company about it to see if they have anything.

I don't think CA insurance companies cover windshield cracks from debris unless you specifically include it.
Better get any cracks fixed quick, or else it'll spread.

On a side note:
I played softball this Sunday with a bunch of friends and parked my car next to third base behind the fence.
Two foul balls went near and hit my friend's car (Nissan Sentra). He was parked between me and a new Scion Tc. He's now got a good, fat dent on his hood. Thank God for Nissan's ugly finder option on their cars!
