Window Tint Laws in North Carolina

I know that 35% tint is legal in NC and not to fall below 32% at inspection. Does this apply to all of the windows, side and rear glass? I looked at NC DMV but it does not say anything really specific. I would like to do 20% on the rear.

Crissy, you've got it and they measure with a tint meter during the annual inspection. For that pleasure, you get to pay an Extra $10 on the inspection fee.

BUT, they can't meter the rear window. You *might* slide by, but it's a risk.

Almost every shop that does the inspections also charges that extra $10 fee as a part of the inspection. If their meter shows too much blocked (i.e. 20%) then they will NOT give you a new inspection sticker. Rather, they "write you up" and you have a certain number of days to get it corrected (i.e. removed) to come into compliance. If you don't then you don't get a valid inspection sticker. Yea, I know is sucks but the reality is that in NC (with a dark interior) you really don't NEED anything darker than the legal 35% (I had 20% on originally, stripped it off and replaced it with 35% and took before and after pics with both - You may still find those before and after on here or possible the other Acrua site. I don't recall which it was).
