you might have better luck trying this method in a bar. just replace the TL with a dude and see what develops.

Because its a 4 door sedan that most people could give two shits about. I do find the Type S to certainly be more enthusiast oriented and I would say about 50% of the time if im driving by another Type S I do see the person acknowledge me somehow whether it be looking at the car hard or a thumbup or something.
I know there are other cars that do this as well, but the Corvette wave is super popular. Some people may think its gay but pretty much every single time you drive a Corvette expect to get a wave from another vette driver. Man I miss the Corvette community I gotta get myself another one!

i'd answer
if i was thinking about the car when you showed up
otherwise i'd think you're hitting on me
the car is not a rare super nice one the kind exclusive model, it's more common than a Civic and most people don't care much what they drive, so your excitement doesn't resonate with them

They don't wave because most of the people you are probably waving to or thumbs upping are 80 year olds that can't see what gesture you're making and probably think you're giving them the finger.

Yah, to most people the TL is just a car. No reason why they'd bond with anyone over it. Not like an enthusiast's car. I don't even look at other TL's to see if they wave unless its obviously modified.

LOL...this is funny.
My wife, 5yr old and 20yr old stepkid - when riding in the TL-S - love to bring attention to other TL/TL-s drivers. It starts with me yelling out
"NBP TL-S SPOTTED..incoming"... so they all roll down the windows and
scream at the guy "whooo hooo TL Type S whoooooo..." and sometimes "whoooo... why u not have type S? whooo hooooo" lol...
i have it on video care of my dash cam..i'll post it soon.

We were traveling down the road in the middle of the Mohave, my wife was driving at the time when she said, "Did that Acura driver just wave at me?" being relatively new to the Acura world, this surprised us. I saw it all the tie between STi drivers and long before that, in my 914 but not so much it the TL. As others said, this is just a sedan to most people.

regarding the comment about TL being more common than a Civic, well, no. Not even remotely close.
I never bother even looking at another TL unless it has work done to it. If I see a-spec, I usually give it 40/60 odds that the person is an enthusiast.
as others have said, the vast majority of TL drivers aren't really enthusiastic like we are here on Acurazine. I mean, the last time I was at Acura Brookfield, they turned me car on in the service area, and everyone stopped to look because it's so loud and most of them are thinking "WTF is wrong with that Acura?!?!?" lol
Every once in a while I will be cruising down the freeway going past another TL and they will take offense and try to floor it as I'm cruising past, but that's rare. And they are being jerks. So F them.
I see other TL's coming from a mile away, and I do notice a lot of them looking at my car as they approach from behind, but that's about it. There's no thumbs up involved.
True performance cars just command a different audience - when we're rolling in the M3, it's nonstop thumbs up. All day every day from everyone.
The 6MT on my license plate has been a dead giveaway to any enthusiast, I've had people in everything from 370z's to 3kgt VR-4's take immediate interest in racing me because they said they saw the license plate. Nearly any TL owner would not have a clue, though, lol.

Jeep wrangler owners also will always wave at you too. At lease the older jeep owners.
For the TL, not that exciting. I see plenty. No way to really establish a demographic. Some kids some women some old some young....only way to tell if they are enthusiasts is by the car. Even then a lot don't look back.
My tint is dark so I doubt others seen me staring at their cars. I see them stare back sometimes though

there is one TL, who i see on the exit ramp from time to time, he's clearly heading to his job; it's been debadged but no other visible mods. though i seem to never be in my TL when I see him...
otherwise they're all stock TLs on the road, and they probably don't even realize their association with honda.

I love my TL type S and I will waive at you no matter what. We have something special in common and if you fail to realize that and just say its a regular car, then you're not worthy of driving a third gen TL.

I hardly ever see 3Gs where I live, when I do its almost always on the turnpike and its a middle aged-older driver who could care less that I have the same car, they have Mass plates too. Nonetheless I do get kinda excited when I see another 3G, but I don't chase them down. There is one 04-06 NBP w/ A-Spec in my area but im always on the bike when I see it, Iv wondered if he is an A-ziner.

Sometimes I'll wave at another 350Z own, especially if it's modded. Sometimes I'll get a response. The other day in traffic going home and a fellow 350Z that I just pasted caught up to me and asked if my rims where Plasiti-dipped? I noticed his was. I replied that "yes they are". He also noticed my stubby radio antenna and wanted to know where I got it. End of confo.

I don't think I've ever had a random conversation with a TL owner. It is kind of funny that they will never look in my direction. I point it out to the fiancée all the time as we're coming up on a TL and they will look the other direction to the point of being funny. I don't get it. I've had other car owners ask me a out the car because of the brakes and tires. I understand other more rare cars or high performance cars. Every 5-10 years when I see another GN on the road and I'm actually driving mine there's usually a race followed by a 5 hour conversation and exchanging phone numbers. You know a high performance car owner is probably an enthusiast. A TL is just basic transportation to most. I talked to a distant relative after seeing his TL-S in the garage and he called it the sporty model and said be got it because he liked the rims. After having a conversation with him I realized he knew nothing about the car.
I'm not against having a random conversation with a TL owner but they're a weird group around here. Mine is one if the only non stock ones around here and most of them that have done rims look worse and smaller than stock.

As for other TL owners giving me a thumbs up or something, every once in a while I'll get one, but it's not something I actively do or look for. I've gotten thumbs up from people driving anything from a Toyota Tercel to a new M3, and my car isn't anything to write home about. Certain people just view cars as a way to get around town, not something they enjoy.
