Why premium fuel??

Why is Acura using premium Fuel instead of 87 and what would happen if you were to use 87 instead of 91. I am just wondering ???

There have been many threads about this. Basically, the TL's high-compression engine runs optimally on the higher-octane. It can run on the lower, but you may not get as much power and may damage the engine over time.

lower power plus lower gas mileage = lose more money for gas over time and dont get the hp you paid for.

Our engines have an 11:1 mechanical compression ratio. That coupled with more spark advance requires the use of higher octane fuel which has a higher flash point and the ability to ward off the onset of detonation. As you know, the fuel-air mixture in a car's cylinder burns (it does NOT explode). Lower octane fuels used in engines requiring higher octane use run the risk of exploding as opposed to just burning. You do not want this to happen.

Considering the cost of owning a $35k car (depreciation, insurance, payments, maintenance), the extra $3 a tank for premium is nothing.

Ditto.

You have to wonder why this subject keeps coming up. Yes, the price of gasoline has risen in the past few years more than most of us may have imagined. Still, to be able to afford a TL (and perhaps a house and the other niceties of life) implies a reasonable amount of discretionary income. One has to believe a purchaser of a TL knows what fuel it requires and is willing to pay the price.

I would strongly suggest to those who may be mortaged and/or "borrowed" to the neck to give serious consideration before jumping into a mid-$30K car. This in no way is to imply or suggest the person who started this tread fits this catagory.

It's just a general statement. I work with someone who did just this. He's quite young and bought a new '05 TL with some A-spec hang-ons and really nice 18" wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires. Within 6 months, he had to move to Winchester and sell his TL for a Toyota Prius. Needless to say, he took a bath.

^ nice statement. For awhile, I never noticed Sunnoco changed their so called "premium" from 93 octane to 91 and Ultra from 94 to 93. So when I first got my TL, I just told them "premium" and fill her up. A few months later, I noticed it's 91 octane.........

NOw I use nothing but 93 octane, but 91 seemed ok. I didn't have a problem with it.

because car cralws when 87 is in tank and temperature hits 100 degree.

I use 89 in winter + I live @ 1000ft elevation.
91 will really make you enjoy the car during summer.
