Question Why is my Navi off?

When I am parked in my driveway and Display Current Location, the Nav system gives me an address that is down the street a ways. I've tried this at 2 of my friend's houses also and in both places an address other than their's was displayed. It looks like my Nav system is a little off. Why is that? Is there any way to calibrate the system to get it right on? Doesn't seem right that it doesn't give the exact location. I think it should. I mean what good is it to get directions to someone's house if it doesn't take you exactly there...

Thanks.

There is a way to calibrate your NAV. Part near a major road. If your Nav icon is off, move your icon. Read your manual to do so (I cannot remember).

Pretty sure the "option" to fine-tune the Navi settings is on Setup Screen number 4 ...

That can just be because of inaccuracy in the DVD database, not necessarily a problem with GPS accuracy. There seems to be lots of errors in the database on exactly where an address is - it can be off by as much as a block or more. The reverse situation can happen when you input an address and tell it to take you to that destination. The final destination doesn't always match the real street address. The situation is likely to be worse in "unverified" areas on the maps.

I don't find anything in the manual or Option screens that let you make any type of adjustments or "zeroing" of the Nav system...

It's there, either screen 3 or 4. Your adjustment will be gone as soon as you turn the key off. The next time you fire up your navi, it will go back to reporting position via the default setting.

Again, folks, addresses are on the DVD. They aren't coming from the GPS satellites. If the arrow that shows your location is off, and is off consistently, that could mean adjustment is necessary, of course.

You may be finding the problem that I have. They put the street addressing backwards on my street. The higher numbers are where the lower numbers should be.

Let's just say they still have some work to do on the Navi database.

I live in an unverified area. When I go to put in my address in the Home memory it won't let me punch in my correct address even though the displayed range of addresses for my street indicates that I should be able to.

The software should allow you to input any valid address in the allowed range if the street is in the database, but it doesn't.
I'm not sure if that's a software "bug" or not, but I'm tempted to report this quirk.

You can read more detailed information about why the Navi is inaccurate: Here.

The Navi adjustment screen is on Page 4. Also, if you do it enough times, it will get slightly more accurate for awhile. I did the adjustment screen every time I started the car for a couple of days, and my display was more accurate for a couple of days after I stopped putting in the adjustments.

OK, let me ask this. When you guys ask to "Display current location" whether at your home address or an address that you know, does the Nav system give you the correct address (as in street number) for the location you are actually at? If you can try this just for the hell of it, I would appreciate the results.

So far at home, work and 2 friend's houses, the address stated by the Nav was not exact.

the GPS system is designed to be off because of the department of defense restrictions. the GPS satellites don't give you adresses of where you are but just logitude and latitude. The dvd system does the rest. sometimes the signal is lost and the system is left to "estimate" the navigation. but starts to recalibrate as soon as it gets a signal. the GPS system is suppose to "upgraded" soon where it will allow it more accuracy(within 10 feet). this will increase the advantages of navigation, but this won't happen for a few more years so maybe in the 4th gen TL we will get this type of accuracy.

The defense department originally scrambled the GPS signal, but this has now been removed. GPS should get you to within 50 feet. I think the problem with the addresses is in the software. I have used Map Quest on the internet, type in an address, and it might be right, or could be down the street quite a bit.
