Hi - I am looking for a replacement tail light drivers side for my 05 TL non type S. A family member backed into my car and luckily no one was hurt and just the tail light outside shell cracked on my car. Any recommendations on where to get the best price for a NEW (not used and cracked like some on ebay) tail light? acuraoemparts wants several hundred for a fully assembly...

Thanks!

I would pm "Acktl05". He is a vendor on here and specializes in custom taillights. I'm sure he has a few factory taillights laying around. There is a blacked out set in the bm right now for $150.

Your comment assumes ebay sells only depo tails.

+1.

Ebay has the cheapest prices. It depends how patient you are.. but since you're looking for an all red 04-06 tail, there are a lot of those, even OEM.
Check ebay, just make sure that the listing explicitly mentions OEM, not OEM style or depo.

I've patiently watched ebay for 07-08 base tails. Over a period of two months, I bought a set individually, one for $40 shipped and the other for $60 shipped. In mint condition.

Also, be very careful to look at the photos closely and carefully. Many have chips and cracks so if the photos don't show all areas of the tail, I advise you to send the seller a message for more photos.

But for what it's worth, I wouldn't spend more than $40 for a single tail light, especially an 04-06 tail.

Thank you for the tips. Anyone replace tail lights without completely removing the bumper? I see some threads about it but not too many details. Is it just removing the covered screw in the trunk and pulling it down?

I've done it, only because I know the bumpers front to back like second nature.

It's a pain in the ass since there's barely any room to fit your hand to remove the two bolts behind the part of the bumper just under the tail. For ease, I would recommend removing the rear bumper. But if you don't mind "stretching" the bumper a bit (might not fit flush when putting back together) and if you have small hands with the right tool (hex bolt x2), then it's possible.

Thanks for the follow-up.

Has anyone compared a Tyc vs Depo vs OEM? Is there a noticeable difference?

Rockauto has generics for $54, Tyc for $64 and "regular inventory" which could mean Depo for $61.

Quote: DEPO has reliability like OEM, but doesn't have the same look as OEM. It is off color, inside edges aren't clean cut and the inside bezel looks cheaper but nothing too noticeable.

As per fitment, not all DEPO have issues and I have seen OEM have issues with fitment. I have seen/made/installed A LOT of tail lights so this is my opinion since I specialize in them.

Eagle eyes on the other hand are the worst made replica and suck, I hate them with a passion.

THANK YOU for the info. I bought a set on eBay (pulled from a TL that replaced their lights with a type - s). Took about an hour and a half and wasn't too difficult just time consuming. Thank you to this forum for all the good info.

Did you end up taking the bumper off?

I have a drivers side taillight from my 05 base that I can sell. I broke the passenger tail light and just replaced both with type-s lights. This left me with a broken passenger side taillight and a perfectly good drivers side taillight. Let me know if interested.

Sorry, I'm a newbie - and have a couple questions. I need two tail lights, both of my rears are slightly cracked on the '08 base TL I just bought.

Here come the potentially dumb questions (sorry if they are):

1) will the type-s tails fit perfectly on my car, with no mods?

2) are the blacked out base '08 base TL tail lights legal? Will the brake lights and rear turn signals be red still? I don't know if the actual lights are red, or the lights are white and they look red because the tail light cover is red.

newtlowner:

1. this thread is 2.5 years old since last activity
2. type s tail lights were only available from 2007-2008 (there were no type s models for the 3g chassis before this)
3. yes they will fit your car
