every single car's owner manual for any car for like the past 2 decades or more, has basically said "do not top off, emissions equipment can be damaged", so it's not like it is something "new" or "uncommon"
and you got lucky too, did the gas station pay for the diagnostic fee too? because they were the direct cause of it
but yeah normally it is more expensive to do repairs then just reading a code, and maybe erasing it
They didn't pay for it, but I did have a talk with the guy the next time i went there. He tried to tell me that it's my responsibility to tell him not to top it off, which is total BS.
Yea. It's actually against the law for you to pump your own gas here, cuz they are trying to create jobs.
That, to me, is rediculous. It's my own property and if I don't want someone touching it, I should have that right. That's like saying you can't mow your own lawn or groom your own dog, for the sake of creating jobs.

if its $45.03 i top it off to $46...$1 = 0.3-0.4 gallons of gas...so i dont think it should hurt anything....

maybe try the rounding it off to the nearest half dollar, or whole dollar instead.

On my ex-Accord, the nozzle mechanism would always click off too soon setting it on the pump's fastest speed, so I always set the nozzle clicker to pump at the slowest rate. So now, when I get gas in NJ, one of the 2 states left that don't allow self-service (and where I can still get Premium for under $3.60), I always tell the attendant to "put it on slow speed otherwise it ejaculates prematurely".
Regardless, I still pull out after the initial click.

With Rentals, I do not tap wipe or any drips and might top off.

First click, wait a few seconds tap the nozzle I have never gotten gas on my car even in the full cap area. Then I turn the gas cap so it is horizontal with tighten to first click straight and level, If I miss the mark I go around and try again. When I wash the car i clean the gas cap area with a tooth brush, and it gets clay barred and waxed twice a year as well. Drives my GF nuts.

and i know sure as hell i don't care about rentals, with doing reverse donuts, or not slowing down for speed bumps and such; part of the reason why i will NEVER used one

Spoke with my dealer this morning. If you overfill to the point where it is too much fuel, you will get an immediate check engine light. They do want me to stop by for a quick inspection, so I will do that one day this week, but until they convince me otherwise, I am going to add around 2 gallons from the first click.

I think the difference is that it is in fact their pumps that you have to use.. so they can justify/argue that they don't want people potentially messing up their expensive system.. just a thought.

After reading through this entire thread I didn't see anyone ask about how many gallons of usable fuel are in a tank when filled to the first click.
I have run my tank down to when the alert comes up on the MFD. I then drive up to 30 miles and have never put more than 14.5 gallons into my tank.
Are there really another 2.6 gallons of usable fuel?
Our cars have a 17.1 gallon tank in them. Some day I want to run the tank dry . . . in front of a gas station of course Then fill up and see for myself. BUT! if one of you has already done this experiment, save mE the time and effort please and post your experience here.

as far as on the 2g side, people have gotten like over 16 gallons (i have done 15 something with letting the pump just click off the first time) into them, and they are roughly the same sized tank at 17.? gallons of "said" capacity
basically it's all a matter of how dry you are willing to run the tank down, with exactly how much you are going to get in there

Yup I have put 17.1 gallons in the tank....and the tank had prolly .3-.4 gallons in there....
was experimenting how many miles the car goes after the light and after the range goes to ZERO....so I was carrying a bottle with a gallon in it....i went dry and the car stopped in the middle of the highway....i put the gallon in and went to the gas station around 12 miles away....so i think i had .3-.4 gallons in....and i wanted to top it offffff (another experiement)....the pump clicked at 16 gallons....i kept topping it off and finally i saw gas at the top of the tank and I stopped at 17.1 gallons....
so I guessed our tank is 17.5 gallons....

but they may have also not included the "expansion" room into the calculations though, but basically 17.1 gallons of useable fuel (with not filling it past the first click)

I filled last night, had run around 12 miles after the low fuel light illuminated. I pumped 13.1 gallons at the first click. I added another 1.1 gallons after for a total of 14.1, stopping when the pump started clicking off as soon as I squeezed the handle.

when the range goes to 0, you have a tad bit more than 1.5 gallons in the tank....
so you had 12 miles on there which means you have ~ 2 gallons in the tank...you pumped in 13.1 and added another 1.1 gallons, which says you have 16.2 in your tank....prolly .2-.3 more....
I pump on the slowest mode and once the pump stops i add in .4 gallons (round off to the next dollar).....but just few post about i was asked to round off to the next dime or 50 cents which means .2 gallons....so I would have around 16ish in the tank....
the question here is where to stop pumping....is adding 17 gallons to your tank good or does it damage anything ? or should you stop at the click and have prolly 15-16 gallons in your tank...

According to my service manager, if you overfill the tank it will give you a check engine light when you start the car. That being said, I agree that I most likely had between 16-16.5 gallons in the tank, which is more than plenty of room for fuel expansion. I did not look at the miles to empty, so I don't know what that reading was.
