When to do Timing Belt - Interference Motor?

I have around 84k miles on my 04 acura tl 6 speed.

Wondering when I should do the timing belt and what other service is needed around this mileage?

What if the timing belt were to break would it damage the engine?

Also how long are you guys going before oil changes? And are you using synthetic oil only?

Thank you.

If you do a quick search here you should find the answers. But generally you want to do the timing belt at 105k.

Also you will want to do the water pump (wholesalepartsguy here has a good package special to help you save money on the parts), tensioner pulley, and probably the spark plugs. It is also debatable but some people like to go ahead and have the valves adjusted at 100-105k especially if they're going to keep the car for a while.

Edit: Even with good synthetic oil (most people here recommend Amsoil 5w30 or Redline 5w30...they're both great oils) I have found through mail-off oil analysis that the MID is pretty much dead on for when your oil needs to be changed. For me it's generally around 5500-5700 miles.

Well I have 144k and havent done it yet, but thats more out of laziness and stupidity than great knowledge. lol

I'd call around to some reputable import shops, as they'll be less expensive than the dealership and prob do a better job.

is this a non interference motor?
If you dont do it will it damage the engine if the timing belt breaks?

What has it cost you guys to do the timing belt and water pump?

Thanks

Yes, our engines are interference engines. You do NOT want to have your timing belt break on you.

Things to have done when it's time for a timing belt replacement (105K miles);
  • Water pump.
  • Any pulleys/tensioners in questionable condition.
  • Serpentine belt.
  • Hoses.
  • Spark plugs.
  • Valves adjusted, if needed.
  • All fluids, if not already changed, such as brake fluid, clutch fluid, power steering fluid.
  • Have your A/C system checked out.

There are more items to be checked/fixed/replaced. One of the member recently posted a list of them so do a search and if you find it, please post the link for others.

Btw, there was a recent post of someone who had never replaced theirs until it broke at over $200k - luckily engine was fine.

(I am not advocating such stupidity)

You are aware that this is all covered in your owner's manual?

The other members did a good job of letting you know what services need to be done when the timing belt is replaced. I wanted to add that your car is nearly 7 years old. My TL is an 04 with 90,000 miles and I just replaced my timing belt and water pump along with all the other stuff mentioned about 1000 miles ago. The age of the belt also needs to be considered here too, not just mileage. If I were you, I'd get that service done now.

interference motors should have chains like a toyota 22RE. putting a belt on one shows that a moron designed the engine. belts should only go on non-interference motors.

Or just don't design the engine to be an interference engine. Not a hard thing at all to do.
