What's in a VIN?

My Dealer just called me and told me my VIN.. It ends in 061445.. I have seen a few post about how many TLs have been made and such, but really wanted to know if certain VIN numbers mean anything??

They told me I they should have my car at the dealer on the 27th of this month.. Let me know if you have information on what a VIN of 061445 tells me??

VIN (Vehice IDentification Number) is a unique number alloted to a car when it is planned to be manufactured. The whole no. carries meaning. See below. Your VIN sr. no means that your alloted car was 61,445th manuafactured TL. A lot depends on the this as it decideds the batch when it was prodused. Usually TSBs(technical service bulletins) tell service places that the TSB is applicable to which VINs.

How to decode a VIN :
Example VIN: 19U UA6 5 5 * 4 A 000001

In order of grouping above (note added spaces):
19U Honda of America Mfg., Inc. USA, Acura Passenger Vehicle
UA6 Acura TL/J32A3 (model code)
5 for 6 speed, 6 for 5 spd. Automatic (kind of backwards)
2 for A/T, 5 for 6 spd. M/T, 6 for 6 spd. M/T with hi-per tire option
Check digit - there's a formula for this that can be found with a web search. Basically, it's a letter or number calculated based on other VIN letters/numbers. If it's "wrong", it means the VIN is wrong.
Model Year (4 is 2004)
Factory Code (A is Marysville, Ohio)
Serial number (starts with 000001 for USA model, starts with 800001 for Canadian model)

The example code above would be a 6 speed manual without the summer tire option. Check digit wouldn't normally be a *.

A VIN of 061445 means your TL will be the 61,445th produced. Since you are getting a new car, you won't have any early build problems obviously. That's all I can tell, but I am no expert.

If you are getting a new car off the plant, I would assume so.

Newer=better?

Minor changes and adjustments are made on the assembly line throughout the model year (MY).

If Acura is getting a lot of warranty claims from the dealers because of the adhesive not holding the headliner securely, they will make a change on the fly. They don't have big inventories of these things since they practice "Just In Time" purchasing and inventorying. They try and plan to get what they need just in time to use it so that they don't have big stockpiles (and locked in capital) when it's not needed.

In general, I would just assume that the Acuras being made now have corrected quite a few early build issues. Some we know about, such as tires and transmissions. Others, we will probably never know about.
