What percentage of tinting is best?
#2
50% will not be very visible at all from the exterior, but it will block a good portion of the harmful UV rays, etc. I like mine for UV blocking, easier on eyes, looks, and privacy. I went for 20% all around on my NBP. I actually wish I wouldve done 15%, but the shop i went to went from 20% to 5%...and I definitely didnt want LIMO tint. Its a personal preference really. if you want to "see" the tint for looks, dont go lighter than 35%. If you don't like the looks of tint, then go 50%. Just make sure to adhere to local laws, unless you live in a state where they dont enforce window tinting (like I do in Nevada). 35% on the front windows is the max darkness legally, but I went 20% all around. been pulled over SEVERAL times and never been bitched at about front plate or tint for that matter.
good luck. hope u dont get the window tint scratching problems like i got.

How is the stock tint. It is referred to on the sticker as "green heat-resistant tint". I wonder what % that is? 50% If you add 50% to 50%, will it net 25%?
Anybody have a TL with stock tint in a hot southern climate? How is it?

Light permitted is the norm for measuring. I think the stock tint is something like 85%, you can't see it at all. I just got 50% on front and 35% on back, the limits here in VA. Not as dark as I'd like it to be during the day, but at night you can't really see in from the outside (I have ebony interior, so that helps)

Lifetime tint guarantee: Forget it!
When I got my old Maxima tinted, I paid extra for a lifetime warranty.
Fourteen years later, the back window bubbled up and I returned to the same shop that installed it. I had all my paper work and my receipt for the EXTRA charge I paid for the warranty.
The shop would not honor the warranty. They said, "Who expects tint to last 14 years?" Excuse me? What is the meaning of lifetime? They responded that is for the lifetime of the original purchaser.
I said, "I AM the original purchaser."
They side stepped that issue by saying that the company, Insulfilm, had been bought by Llumar and was no longer doing business as Insulfilm.
To make a long story short (too late?), I am taking the shop and Llumar to court. You don't just get the assets when you buy a company; you get the liabilities too. BEWARE the "lifetime" warranty. They're all pirates.

On another thread in this forum, there is extensive opinion that a mole skin strip must be added to the TL's doors or the tinting will be scratched and ruined. Is anyone having the moleskin added?
Must they remove the door panels to add the moleskin?
Are you not worried about it? Will the shop stand behind the film if it gets all sratched from the hard rubber wiper on the inside of the door?

The shop I'm going to quoted me $279 for the 35% on all 7 windows & $379 for the "platinum plus" material. He also stated a "life-time" warranty. He has been in business for some time & does all the dealer cars. I've never heard of "mole-skin"....I'll have to ask him!

RF Blockage
Are you guys aware that the metallic coated tints will interfere with the HFL of the cell phone and, possibly the Navi which antenna is on the package shelf in the back. The nubby antenna on the roof is for the XM Sattelite radio. I got that from the tinting shops.

Just my luck. I had my windows tinted last Saturday and already got pulled over for it yesterday. I have 35 fronts and 20 rears. I may change the fronts to 50 now. I have 50 on the fronts on my other car for 5+ years and never got pulled over. At least the officer liked the car, "nice car...but you can't have your front windows tinted."

I have had 7 cars tinted at the same place becaue they have been around 22 years. They are expensive, $310 but they automaticlaly put the moleskin in, never had to ask. The moleskin added $10 otherwise it woudl have been $300. When I went back after reading all the posts here about scratching, they said, "we've been in business 22 years, we know what we are doing and thats why our prices are alittle higher, we know how to tint a car and have it last" they had put it in by default. I go with Formula One 35% metalic, lifetime warranty. Don't have Navi so metalic was not a big deal, it does hurt radio reception a bit (especially AM) but I love XM and listen to it more than Radio or CD, and what's this I hear this car has a cassette...hee hee, what no 8-track?
I know others have gotten tinting fare less than I paid, but in 7 cars I have never had a bubble, scratch ot any thing go wrong with the tint, it looks like it came from the factory with it. You do get what you pay for.

I voted for 50% two months ago. But after talking to the experienced tint guy today, he strongly suggested my Parchment interior will perfectly fit with dark tints. I have to agree he's right.
I don't want to black out my car and have any trouble with cops. But, after tinting was completed, the result is great.

Finally got it tinted? Good. I got 35% sides and 15% back window. That, of course, is in addition to the standard 75% factory tint. I like my look also. As you know, I did my own felts on all 4 doors. Just in case.
I like your color combination. My last car was that color outside with a dark maroon cloth interior. It held up superbly and always looked good. Low maintenance.
Cheers!

Thanks...
XP,
Got to discuss this with you... Today, while the guy tinted my car, I pulled out all 4 doors' black plastic double-rubber strips, which are so "smooth"... this reminds me of those S500/X5 which require felts installation due to their "rough" rubber. After comparing those cars that don't need felts, our 04TL are actually in the pretty good shape.
I then decide to do some experiments... I make sure the tint guy have 0.5-1 inch overlap put lower than these strips, and I liked to see why lots of ppl's TL got scratched by these smooth like silk rubber...
But, I'm sure dirt or particle would hurt the tints if sticky over the rubber... :o

My eyes have now become sensitive to sunlight. I have to walk around outside with my eyes half way open, too bright.

If you have a rear detecting radar, it will not perform as well with metallic tint on the rear window. It is RF waves. Ppl don't usually tint the front window.
Metallic tint on the rear will also degrade your AM radio reception with or without Navi. It can also slightly degrade the signal of your cell phone when it's inside the car
I paid $225 for my Pinnacle all the way around in West Palm Beach. I installed the moleskin/felts myself ahead of time. I recommend it after hearing many tales of immediate scratching after tinting. It happened to the son of my salesman at Acura. First time the window went down, his scratched. But we have a sandy environment here in Florida. Other people on this forum have reported NO PROBLEMS yet. Others, who reported no problems initially, re-posted saying they spoke too soon.
It is not the rubber wipers that scratch the tint film, but rather a sharp particle trapped between the rubber wiper and the film. The felt buffers those potential scratchers.
