What else do you lose without NAV
What else do you lose without NAV
I am working on getting 2004 TL. I already have a 2004 MDX with NAV so I don't think I will need the NAV with this car. So I have been reading like crazy and trying to figure out what else I will lose if I choose not to get the NAV. I know of course I would lose the Navigation function and 3D Solar Sensing Climate Control.
Thanks
Thanks
You lose voice commands of the climate control, radio, XM, CD. HOWEVER, you still retain the voice command of the bluetooth phone feauture regardless of the Navi\non-Navi. I can't think of anything else that you lose.
It basically comes down to whether or not you want the screen. If you can deal with the dash without the screen (personally, I think the dash looks good either way) and don't need the extra voice commands or Navigation, then the non-Navi will do nicely and be cheaper to boot. I needed the navi for work and travel. To be honest, I probably would have gotten it regardless of need. I like toys

I've pretty much decided to use the Thomas Guide and keep the money. Too bad, I like toys too. But for $3200 I could get a lot of other cool stuff!

people who don't have NAVI's should not opine... unless you get well informed...
where is what you lose if you don't get the NAVI:
- 3D Solar Sensing Climate Control (as you said)
- 8 " color screen that I will use for :
backup camera
XBOX / PS2 gameplay (not for driver, or while driving)
DVD movie play (when waiting for somebody in the car, or at the beach)
Internet connectivity, to do research on the web (unlimited options here)
Night vision in the front of the car (ala Cadillac) to avoid hitting a person or animal
you can't see soon enough to avoid (like a cyclist)
- Extra XM information displayed in your Touch-screen
- Self-adjusting clock, and calendar/scheduler, using the GPS
it will adjust when crossing time-zones, and Daylight Savings Time automatically and
accurately.
- Display of all your 6 speaker settings ALL at once, so you can adjust them better.
- Trip computer, it's in there but in developer's screen at the moment.
- Settings for trip computer for 17" and 18" tires - resettable by user in developer's
screen.
- display of all XM satellites on the sky (dev mode)
- Display of sun position in degrees and elevation (dev mode)
- Control for microphone sensitivity for HFL (maybe in non-navi too)
- display of exact coordenates (long, lat, elevation, etc)
so you can relay that information to an ambulance or police so they can find you
and help you if you are injured, etc.
- Calculator with built-in formulas for Temperature, weight conversions, etc
- Calendar with appointment and personal information reminders, like wedding
aniversaries, birthdays, etc (your wife/husband will love you for remembering)
- about 300 voice commands, including A/C, Status and time of the day
- A map and software you can upgrade via pcmcia slot to change the look or features
if needed, if you don't have the Navi you cannot upgrade.
- you also loose an ungly dashboard for a better designed one. (agreed by most here)
- if you paid 3200 you got ripped off, I only paid $1200 (because of a $800 discount)
it will add value to the car when trying to sell it.
It's like putting tiles on a house before selling it, it attracts buyers, even though you know you will not recover 100%. so what, you sold it faster than the other guy down the block.
there is more, but this is all I remember for now... is that enough ?

I think I've seen this somewhere before on the forum, but what keys do you press to go into developer mode?
What's required to add Internet and Night Vision?

You also miss the bluetooth linked by voice to the phone numbers in the database, and someone to talk to if you get bored.
Someone awhile back summed up the Nav/Non-Navi debate very well by saying you have 3 classes of TL owners. To paraphrase:
1. Navi buyers who were happy with their decision.
2. Non-Navi buyers who were happy with their decision
3. Non-Navi buyers who really regretted not spending the extra $'s to get the Navi

What you lose is an attractive interior. That gaping hole in the middle of the dash looks like Rosanne Barr's head on Jessica Simpson's body. Makes no sense.
The only people not getting navi are little high schoolers who are in over their heads. They really want an Accord, but are trying to impress the cheerleaders in their BMW's.

in order to get into the Developer's menu you have to press
Map, menu and cancel at the same time.
But I must disclose that you are at your own risk, since the settings of your NAV can be changed (although I believe you won't damage the unit).
The night vision is very simple, once you have connected a video diverter input for your daylight backup camera, you will have to use a button to switch to a camera in the front with night vision capability, similar to the infra-red Sony cameras, and you can even illuminate the road using infra-red diodes. It's not illegal since incoming traffic will not see any lights.
Many home video surveilance cameras already come with night-vision capabilities, you would have to install it behind the grill or under the bumper.
For the more advanced users, you can use heat sensing cameras, but I won't go there...
Search the forum for other people who have done video cameras on the TL and you will follow those procedures.
The Trip computer is built-in into one of the menus, where it shows avg mpg, speed, elapsed time, etc.
I can't show you a screen-shot because I got rear-ended last week and my car is at the Acura body shop for 3 weeks, repairing damages to trunk, bumper, rear doors and c-pillar.
A lady with a cell (hell)-phone hit me at 50 mph! - kids are ok, my wife and I have to go to therapy for recovery, no broken bones... :o
