What do ya think? Type-S, rebuilt title
Hey guys,
I've been looking at getting a TL Type-S for a while now, and recently came across this one. It has a rebuilt title... and the guy sent me a few pics of what it looked like before it had the body work done. It looks pretty good from the pics, but I haven't seen it in person. He originally listed it for $17,500 but has since lowered it to $16,500. It has around 20,000 miles on it (before the accident). What do you guys think? Is it even worth considering? I would be driving this car for a long time, so the rebuilt title isn't worrisome to me unless the car has issues.

well ive owned a salvaged title car bf. I can tell you this, if your looking for a daily driver and you plan on driving it till it dies then its worth it but first and foremost check the frame make sure its not bent. at the end of the day the car wont drive 100% ever and expect some random random repairs , not necessarily expensive but just random like noise of air coming in from door panel ( common with collision cars)/ electrical going haywire ie) car alarm etc. btw 16K for that car is wayyyy to much. im telling you dude i use to go to auctions, those cars are sold for 3-7K. Theres a fully rebuilt one on ebay now for 8K. i think its a 2008 check it out. for a couple grand more you can get one thats not damaged. salavge in my opnion is only worth it if you need a nice car but you dont have much money to spend (17K is alot of money) if you plan on babying it, well ur gonna spend alot of money on random annoying repairs. just my opinion. if you can get it for 9500 then go for it, but if you really want a tl-s. keep your eyes open, this is a buyers market. just my opinion

Here are a few more pics... but I'm not too concerned about those not being the "real" pictures. The car is somewhat close by so if it's condition doesn't match the pics then it's a deal breaker. He said that the car was registered in California and fixed there, and then the dealer (notice the Utah dealer plates) bought it to sell here.\

OP--I live in Utah County. Did Transwest Auto rebuild it? I've had a couple of friends buy their rebuilt cars and they had really good luck with them.
I do agree with one of the other posters...17K is a lot of money to pay for a salvaged auto. Even if you are thinking long-term, stuff happens in life and even the best thought out plans seem to change.

Run carfax on VIN
Get list of parts replaced (OEM or not?)
Probably had frame damage (rear window popped upper right corner, trunk lid alignment). Who straightened the frame damage? How?
Was this an insurance claim? If so, get copy of estimate and final payout.
Who did the repairs? Get BBB report for shop. Ask around to find out about the quality of repairs done by the shop.
Drive it yourself. Take it to qualified mechanic and body shop for check out.
Any bondo? Where?

I've had several salvage cars and it's a hit or miss with them. I bought from dealers I knew and the cars were repaired professionally. If the repairs are done right I would consider buying it. The price is pretty good too.

Also notice- in the second picture you posted (after the car was repaired) the back passenger tire is out at the top. Now look at the 4th pic posted (before repairs). Tire is out at the top as well. Likely there is still some rear suspension damage still unaddressed. Ask for the alignment specs done after repairs.

What stealership is selling it? If you are in the SLC/Utah area, I would take the care to Mike Hale Acura or Jodi Wilkinson Acura and have them go over it for you. Don't just simply trust the seller!! It might cost you a few $$$ to have them check it out, but its better to do that and find any potential problems now than to get stuck with it and several grand in repairs later!!
(p.s. I bought mine from Mike Hale Acura on State St.)

Thanks for the replies everyone. I have always steered away from cars with a salvage title, but I just wanted to see what you guys thought of this one. I think I will wait it out and find one with a clean record.
Oh and it's nice to see that there are some Salt Lake guys out there tlemmon, how was your experience with Mike Hale Acura? Any experience with Jody Wilkinson? Wilkinson has a nice black Type-S on their lot right now for $23,900...

well from what i heard a salvage title isnt always a bad thing depending on how it was salvaged. it seems that the car has gone through a front end collision which i heard is the worst way to salvage a car. but it all depends on how the car was rebuilt i guess. a friend of mines bought a salvage g35 and eventually one of the cylinders lost compression. but if i were you i would rather buy a base TL or another car with a clean title and not have any risks of future problems.

Never been to Jodywilkinson...
As for Mike hale, my experience with them has been fairly good. My TL had a few minor issues when I bought it, and they took care of all of them. The rear brakes on mine looked worn, and they took 200 bucks off the price of the car when I told them I would do them myself. :-)
I did have one issue that wasn't resolved. They were going to sell the car as a certified vehicle, but decided not to. Too bad for them they told Acura it was certified (Acura and Carfax showed it was certified, and they accidentally included a sheet of paper in the glove box saying it was certified). They told me that they wouldn't honor it as it wasnt sold that way, which is fine, but they should have done more to ensure it wasnt listed as such. I bought an extended warranty for it which makes the certification a moot point, but a certified Acura comes with 3 months of XM radio for free. I told them that is all I wanted, but they still wouldn't help me. I haven't decided what I want to do yet... complain to the owner and or Acura? mebbe...
that type-s w/ nav is damn sexy. I'd go for it if I were you!
