What to do with old, used axles
What to do with old, used axles
I just replaced the axles on my car. One I can turn in to get back a core charge, the other I had to buy new so I’m not sure what to do with my old one (there is actually nothing wrong with it, but it does have ~75k on it. Are there places that will buy this off of me, similar to a core return? Can I get any money back for this or should I just scrap it?
Thanks

Funny...I threw my driver side one away...but still have my passenger side in the attic. I thought the same thing but figured, why would someone pay me for this.
Why the fuk would you replace a good axle?!?!?

People just got money to throw away on these forums!!!
They don't wear out ya know. They are either good or bad. They usually either snap from abuse, or get ruined by contamination due to torn boots. Doesn't matter how many miles are on them. If they are good, then just sell them to someone less dumb on craigs list or give them away at buyers shipping expense.

...someone less dumb...hey hey hey...I resemble that comment!

Actually...my car was at stock height for 5 years before I lowered it pretty aggressively and narrowed down my problem to it being the axle having gotten worn in used to a certain height...this was the master tech at acura that helped me figure it out. My problem (only experienced this on the TL after MANY other cars I've lowered) was that I'd get this little weird shimmy when accelerating. I changed the driver side and it improved...changed out the passenger one and it was gone. I know it's not a NORMAL thing to change out but it fixed my problem.
So yes, I have a good one in my attic.

2) how do you think boots get torn? wear and dry rot. so unless i were to replace the boots on the used axle, it probably wasnt a huge waste of money like you think.

1) i thought both were clicking, but it turns out it was only the drivers side. upon inspection, the boot on the good axle looks good still.

Very true...maybe it was toast...
Also, I'll note that I got a good deal at the dealer for the parts...I want to say it was $140 for the passenger side one and $125 driver...and then I paid a local place 40 bucks per side to install.
I was happy.
